Re: Pneumonia

Yay! I had a super persistent case of (walking) pneumonia last summer. I kept working after the initial couple days of lousiness, but I felt so bad for the labmates who had to hear me hack all day for like three weeks. That was also when I found out that the cough suppressant ingredient of cough med...

Put a tracking collar on it and study its movements.

Re: How do you pass time at boring parties?

I second the playing with pets thing (if no pets, kids may sometimes suffice). I'll also try to strike up a one on one conversation (which I'm much better at than groups) or ask if I can help out with whatever's going on in the kitchen. If all else fails, hang out by the snacks.

I do not. Being in nature and certain live music experiences sometimes feel like my versions of church.

Re: Top 10 Obscure 60s Psychedelic Rock Albums

I was really surprised to click on this post and not recognize any of the artists! Awesome, I'll definitely give these a listen. I was surprised to not see Can anywhere on here, though. Maybe they're not as obscure as I think they are; I definitely haven't listened to them as much as I'd like. Quick...

OMG WHY DIDN"T WE PLAN A SPACEFEM VIEWING EVENT THIS WAS NOT SMRT *facepalms so hard* YOU'RE SO RIGHT. It's not horrendously late... Anyone planning on viewing in the southeast, I'd be down. Western KY/northern TN/southern IL are right around where the greatest and longest parts of the eclipse...

SO MUCH UNIVERSE That was really cool, and beautiful. It always weirds me out when universe things resemble neural networks, which the image at like 0:53 kind of really does. The repetition of shapes in unrelated systems bound by the same laws of physics is both intuitive and counterintuitive, but i...

Yes! I'm pretty close to the path of best visibility, so I'll probably wait til that week to see where within like a 3 hour drive will have the clearest skies and just head thereabouts with my tent.

Re: what's the last movie you saw?

Get Out - It's a satire of the black experience in the form of the suspense/thriller genre. Anyone with an ounce of wit wouldn't take the ending literally and understand it's more like mocking appropriation of black culture by white people. :3houses:.5 It's still pretty good, just doesnt feel like ...

Re: Nerdy bachelorette party ideas?

We will indeed have a kitchen! Glowstick cocktail stirrers would be awesome and super easy. That molecular mixology thing looks really cool, may look into that. The bride's kind of a gamer and I know really likes Skyrim, but I think she's the only one who is. Otherwise, I think everyone's just into ...

Nerdy bachelorette party ideas?

I'm throwing a bachelorette party weekend pretty soon for one of my best friends from college who's in graduate school for biomedical sciences. Actually, all six of the girls attending the weekend are in some form of biology- or medicine-related graduate program. I'll be the first person arriving at...

Re: Brains, Bees, Balls, and Behavior

When those pupil bees returned to the arena alone, they nearly always chose to move the ball closest to the center, which took the least amount of energy and time to obtain the reward! Further, they still chose to do this when the nearest ball was black instead of yellow. They didn't just copy a be...

Brains, Bees, Balls, and Behavior

I have a huge soft spot for bee, learning, and foraging behavior research, so I'm totally into this new study that does all three! Researchers in London co-opted innate behavioral traits of bees to make them learn a completely unnatural behavior: rolling a bee-sized ball into a "goal" to g...

I'm crap at anything formal, but I do freestyle dance pretty well when inspired in a live music setting. I can also dance with props (hula hoops, poi, once a tablecloth at a wedding, scarf, etc.) pretty darn well.

Re: what is your disease?

Stress! Because 1) I study it, 2) I embody it, 3) it is often transmissable between people, 3b) there's arguably currently an epidemic, 4) it physiologically fucks you uuuup all by itself, 5) but it also facilitates ALL THE OTHER DISEASES because fuck your immune system! Moral of the story, who want...

Probably when I was at a zoo. I've never seen one in the wild that I recognized at the time.

The audiobook I most recently listened to was "The Mind of the Raven," though! Now I really want to see one.

We're playing Seafall YAS! How do you like it? How long has each game typically been taking? I played Pandemic Legacy (same maker) last year and was SO impressed with it. Re: What animals are you afraid of?

Even though I realize it's pretty irrational, I'm a bit afraid of sharks. It's only because they're hidden until they're basically touching you, and I don't love things I can't see. After I had a false alarm once, I'm also afraid of bed bugs. I am about 90% better with stinging hymenopterans (bees, ...

Re: Weight Loss Surgery on Kids.

I do find this rather sad. While it's great that we have the medical advances to allow for surgical treatments of various health issues, they are always traumatic and risky to some degree, and thus not ideal. Still, it's an oversimplification to say that people are deciding against healthy food in f...
