Re: do you appreciate parabolas?

They're pretty rad! Actually, I've been thinking about parabolas a bit more than usual lately. One task currently on my to-do list is finding or building a cheap reflective parabolic dish to use when I go record birds in the field. So, this will basically be me in three weeks: https://files.allabout...

Re: What is the optimal amount of art to have in your home?

I like to have my walls at least 50% filled. Every vertical space that could reasonably fit a piece of art on it in my living room has art. I'm a big fan of using tapestries on walls, so the long wall of my living room has two that pretty well fill the space. I have one pretty nice painting that I w...

"Let her speak, please!" - mansplaining at the World Science Festival

There's so much that is so familiar in this interaction that took place this past weekend at the World Science Festival in NYC. First, the panelists chosen for a discussion of theoretical physics included five men and one woman, Dr. Veronika Hubeny of the University of California - Davis, with anoth...

Oh lilly, I'm so sorry. Fuck him!! That is so much bullshit and so, so opposite of what you deserve. You are so strong and I know you will heal, but it sucks so much that you have to go through this. Take care <3.

Re: Pneumonia

Yay! I had a super persistent case of (walking) pneumonia last summer. I kept working after the initial couple days of lousiness, but I felt so bad for the labmates who had to hear me hack all day for like three weeks. That was also when I found out that the cough suppressant ingredient of cough med...

Re: How do you pass time at boring parties?

I second the playing with pets thing (if no pets, kids may sometimes suffice). I'll also try to strike up a one on one conversation (which I'm much better at than groups) or ask if I can help out with whatever's going on in the kitchen. If all else fails, hang out by the snacks.

Re: Top 10 Obscure 60s Psychedelic Rock Albums

I was really surprised to click on this post and not recognize any of the artists! Awesome, I'll definitely give these a listen. I was surprised to not see Can anywhere on here, though. Maybe they're not as obscure as I think they are; I definitely haven't listened to them as much as I'd like. Quick...

SO MUCH UNIVERSE That was really cool, and beautiful. It always weirds me out when universe things resemble neural networks, which the image at like 0:53 kind of really does. The repetition of shapes in unrelated systems bound by the same laws of physics is both intuitive and counterintuitive, but i...

Yes! I'm pretty close to the path of best visibility, so I'll probably wait til that week to see where within like a 3 hour drive will have the clearest skies and just head thereabouts with my tent.

Get Out - It's a satire of the black experience in the form of the suspense/thriller genre. Anyone with an ounce of wit wouldn't take the ending literally and understand it's more like mocking appropriation of black culture by white people. :3houses:.5 It's still pretty good, just doesnt feel like ...

Re: Nerdy bachelorette party ideas?

We will indeed have a kitchen! Glowstick cocktail stirrers would be awesome and super easy. That molecular mixology thing looks really cool, may look into that. The bride's kind of a gamer and I know really likes Skyrim, but I think she's the only one who is. Otherwise, I think everyone's just into ...

Nerdy bachelorette party ideas?

I'm throwing a bachelorette party weekend pretty soon for one of my best friends from college who's in graduate school for biomedical sciences. Actually, all six of the girls attending the weekend are in some form of biology- or medicine-related graduate program. I'll be the first person arriving at...

Re: Brains, Bees, Balls, and Behavior

When those pupil bees returned to the arena alone, they nearly always chose to move the ball closest to the center, which took the least amount of energy and time to obtain the reward! Further, they still chose to do this when the nearest ball was black instead of yellow. They didn't just copy a be...

Brains, Bees, Balls, and Behavior

I have a huge soft spot for bee, learning, and foraging behavior research, so I'm totally into this new study that does all three! Researchers in London co-opted innate behavioral traits of bees to make them learn a completely unnatural behavior: rolling a bee-sized ball into a "goal" to g...

I'm crap at anything formal, but I do freestyle dance pretty well when inspired in a live music setting. I can also dance with props (hula hoops, poi, once a tablecloth at a wedding, scarf, etc.) pretty darn well.

Stress! Probably when I was at a zoo. I've never seen one in the wild that I recognized at the time.

The audiobook I most recently listened to was "The Mind of the Raven," though! Now I really want to see one.
