Re: Why are men so ready to complain...

I am glad that there are restrooms elsewhere in the station, though I'm curious about how accessible they are, and how accessibility regulations are in general. She says (and from my experience I'd go along with it) that if men are ABLE to sit down, they'd stay in there for hours! Is that because of...

Re: Why are men so ready to complain...

Why not have two regular toilets, either gender-neutral or divided by gender? It's not like anyone can control when they need to make a bowel movement. (b) proof of how our own bodies are made more sensibly (After all, we're Mark 2, they're only Mark 1 - before the improvements were made!) I don't a...

Excepting those quickly banned, I think all the top post-starters started at least one thread I really enjoyed last year. Y'all bring some interesting stuff to the table. I nominate M...

Re: What can on say...

That is horrible. Side note: it took reading an interview with one of the white supremacist alt-right people to realize how much they love referring to things they don't like as cancer . Like, anything opposed to their narrow, paltry version of "Western values?" It metastasizes . In one of...

Re: Yuck Yuck Yuck - continued from "Ranting"

I actually don't think that's fair to men or women, for women to continue to be afraid to be approached when by themselves. I don't like the underlying message to this (not assigning intention by the way), which is that women being afraid is unfair to men and women, as if they either shouldn't be a...

Re: Terrorist attack in Berlin

^ I challenge the premise. How could any one video dispel the fact that immigrant populations are in most cases less dangerous? The Wikipedia entry on the issue is pretty valuable; pertaining to Europe, one study from 2015 includes this sober assessment: Our empirical findings show that an increase ...

Re: Weight Loss Surgery on Kids.

Food companies could just as easily profit from healthy food as they could from unhealthy food. Just a small note: they do profit! There are lots of brands that significantly mark up their prices thanks to the promise of being healthier, greener, better sourced, or more organic. But if I were looki...

Re: do you have big speakers?

I have 6 inch-high speakers for my desktop. Gateway circa 2004. It's one of the two computer parts from that time I still have. (The other is the keyboard I got then. I like the clackety-clack.)

Spacebot works on an orbital rotation where the days are exactly twice as long as those on Earth.

On whatever object that fits that description, happy birthday!

Re: What animals are you afraid of?

Silverfish and house caterpillars both freak me out. Other creepy crawlies, like our large flying roaches and our spiders, I am disgusted by but not especially fearful of. My fear for venomous creatures feels entirely justified, so I won't list those.

Re: Dredging Up The Rape Culture Conversation Part 4Billion

Trying to think through the long reply, so there'll be a few short shots and then I'll sum up: So, when I look at the circumstances surrounding rape and sexual assault, I don't see "normalization" . What I see is a combination of normal human behavior reacting to inhumane behavior. Once a ...

Re: What games are you playing?

I played Reigns. It was a cute little Tinder-based kingdom-ruling game. I enjoyed the weird simplified decision-makng, but wish there were overall more variation, like being a queen sometimes. (That said, I did get to date a bird.) On the board game front, I got Star Wars: Rebellion and Mysterium fo...

Re: Can't Fight The Moonlight

There are tons of songs and poems where seduction is imagined as co-opting a reluctant partner into having sex, which includes one partner not wanting it yet but their being convinced, or one partner playing as not wanting sex to keep up an act. For instance, the first stanzas of Aphra Behn's The Di...

Re: Dredging Up The Rape Culture Conversation Part 4Billion

Is it possible for someone like me to honestly criticize the idea of "rape culture" because I feel it is not useful for solving the very real problem of rape and sexual assault? I think the whole concept improperly frames the problem, putting a greater emphasis on things that require deca...

The early third wave according to a Miltonist

I've been reading some Paradise Lost criticism lately, as I prepare to read and teach the epic poem. Some classics, some contemporary stuff. Mary Nyquist's book article on interpreting marriage in PL was new to me,[1] but the first paragraph delivered a keen opening salvo on what third wave feminism...

Re: tactile stuff

Playdough is pretty ubiquitous, as is batter. Batter has the bonus of turning into delicious breakfast. In the food-as-play category, jello and hardening frosting also count for me. I remember oobleck-like mixtures. Gak was a 1990s thing I mainly used to make fart noises. Silly putty was fun to mani...
