Re: Have you performed on a stage?

I was an amateur dancer for a bit. I've also given a few speeches and been in a play.

Re: When do you feel awkward?

Right now, because I got to this board game pub and it was quiet and now it's loud and it's all strangers and my people aren't here yet because I arrive 5 minutes early like some on-time dilletante.

And now I must be social, for my mocha is in a mug and not a to-go cup.

Re: Presentation

I grew up with an excellent German restaurant nearby. It helped that I lived near a military base with a long tradition of soldiers coming back from deployment in Germany. I could never grow to love sauerkraut, regretfully, but I always loved schnitzel and grew to love the variety of sausage. I'm a ...

Persona 5

At the beginning of April, I got Persona 5 for the PS4. (It's also out for the PS3.) It's a linear, story-based JRPG where you play as a high schooler going to a new school and just trying to do a little good by using newfound powers to steal bad people's hearts. I'm only partway through the game, s...

Re: Wayward (PC game)

I want to check this game out soon. I've played a few survival games like Reign of Kings or The Forest, and found the automatic PvP or PvE eventually made me stop playing. The better I did, the harder I'd be hit for it. With the Reputation system, it sounds like it's possible to balance approaches, ...

Re: Why don't more females study Physics, how could we change things, and should we?

I was going to say "yes, of course we should!" in response to the last question in the subject. To elaborate in light of rowan's post, I think that the lack of women in physics highlights a problem, but that the solution isn't just to raise those numbers, as if it's a problem of interest. ...

Misheard "Falling falling falling fallen. Falling falling falling fallen." Phoenix, "1901." More later - I have to hear the song to remember them. ETA: Weather on the west streets Silver over everything The weather's all wet You're all crone You're all crone Yeah Yeah Yeahs, &quo...

Re: Are you related to any famous people?

Wow, that was cinematic. Like to the point of imagining Sean throwing the beads, which float through the air in slow motion. I'm distantly related to William Jennings Bryan. He was a second or third cousin of my grandfather? My partner's distantly related to Jane Fonda. This means two things - not c...

Re: When do you seek medical attention?

^ This. Pneumonia cost me over $200 out of pocket, and we're on track to spend over $5K on medical costs after insurance.

So I go if I feel horrible and don't improve in a week. Or for checkups. But the money is a factor.

Re: Quicktakes

I had three questions today that could have been answered by reading the prompt for the assignment. I get it; people want confirmation when this is basically their most important grade, and they want to double-check they're not missing anything. Still, in one of them, my response was literally, &quo...

Re: Bilingual Toddler

One of the ideas impressed in me early in linguistics courses was just how early kids are able to distinguish between different languages. Rather like gender, how adeptly they intuit the boundaries between the languages and even dialects around them is incredible. A friend of mine is raising his chi...

Re: The Gentrification of Standing Rock

It's hard to respond to this as a whole, since many people's comments seem to be misconstrued to an extreme of isolationism, when what I'm seeing is encouraging respect for problem-solvers closer to the problem. I generally agree that it needs planning, but I would not use the argument of planning T...

I've gotten sad and remained friends several times in my life. That said, what you say (men getting angry and cutting contact) may be true (again, very generally) because in our culture they feel more entitled to bring things to a head and confess their feelings, disruptions to the social status quo...

Re: Hello!

Welcome to the board! Answers may vary to what you want to know. Personally, I find it useful to have some places (like this) where people sometimes talk feminism and know a thing or two already. It pushes me to do more reading of my own, to try to describe and work through difficult ideas, and to l...

Not dog taint water!

I've been writing this morning at a coffee shop. It's small - about 22 seats and 1 unisex bathroom. 2 baristas, one register.

A school bus of at least 25 high schoolers just stopped here.

I'm going to leave an extra tip today.

Sexual harassment in the workplace, re: commentary on Fox News's recent turnover

I'm going to set out a perspective I'm thinking about regarding sexual harassment in the workplace, in immediate response to Fox News's recent high-profile staff turnover but with an eye to the problem generally: Roger Ailes, Bill O'Reilly, and similar figures get away with sexual harassment for so ...
