Re: what's the last movie you saw?

We saw Hidden Figures over the weekend. :5houses: I really like the early history of NASA. Going to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington and the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL were like religious experiences for me; merely being in the presence of an Apollo capsule or a Satu...

Happy birthday DarkOne! I know it's not the same thing as a monotrome, but I got you a chinchilla butt. Here's to writing sentences that likely no one in the English language has used. http://static.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/perfectly-round-chinchilla-camerons-chinchillas-12-58a...

Reverse image search! If you use Google's image search (images.google.com), look for a camera in the right side of the search bar. Click on it, and you can upload/link to an image that you want to find. You'll usually get different places that the image has been used, and sometimes images like the o...

Re: How do you pass time at boring parties?

^ I read "boring parties" as "obligatory gatherings with people I know less well," like a a work party or a wedding reception where I don't know most of the other guests. Those may end up being great, but I've had some pretty awkward ones.

Biggish. 11? 12? (That's men's in the US. In general, I don't understand what the sizes correspond to in inches or centimeters or some practical kind of measurement. )

I finished Testosterone Rex . Great book! I'm reading The Only Woman in the Room: Why Science Is Still a Boys' Club by Eileen Pollack. The first half (which I'm still in) is a memoir reflecting on Pollack's early educational experiences, which culminated in her being one of the first two women to ea...

I'm pretty close, and my family lives even closer to the line. (We're talking about 5-8 hours.) I'll have to see what my fall schedule is like, but I'll either drive close to the path on a day trip or go hiking.

Here's hoping for clear skies!

Re: what's the last movie you saw?

I saw Hercules on mute while I was bowling. Highly recommended, at least in this format. One of my teammates made us pay attention to all the bits where Hercules (played by Dwayne Johnson) used his bulging muscles to flip horses, pull himself free of pillars to beat his enemies with the chains, and ...

In summer camp, that was the class I skipped most of the week. After the first day, I was just utterly uninterested, and found it more useful to wander about before the class on being a medic.

Re: Gender and racial biases in professor's newsvideo

^ I think that's another way the bias here can be misleading. Like, yeah, it's a possibility that her frantic scrambling could be due to a poor working situation, someone wanting to keep her job. Alternatively, she could really care about this interview and want to help out. They've now had a post-i...

Re: 26 Multicultural Picture Books about Inspiring Women & Girls

Oh, I especially like this one: Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Rudolph Became the World’s Fastest Woman by Kathleen Krull. Wilma Rudolph was a local hero, the fastest woman alive in the 1960 Olympics, and my mom liked using her book in the classroom. It's a really good book, and the paperback's only $6.

Re: How do you pass time at boring parties?

I bring the fun. I can come up with games, conversational topics, and I'm known to always have a deck of cards on me.

If that doesn't work or is frowned upon, I turn to the environment. Books? I read them. Household items? I stack them. Pets? I also stack them.

Gender and racial biases in professor's newsvideo

Last week, a video went viral. Live with the BBC, a professor of political science is talking about the ousting of the South Korean president. While on air, one of his kids comes marching through the door to see what's going on. The newscaster points out the kid is there. The professor smiles and tr...

Re: Is beauty a cultural fabrication?

They don't inspire people to be overweight, but inspire people to remain overweight by celebrating plus size beauty. Do they? That implies that the present cultural shaming would inspire people to no longer be overweight if this messaging were absent, or that the only thing holding people back from...

Drink idea: making something green or blue and using glowsticks as cocktail swizzle sticks. (The mixed drink of choice in this case involved blue curaçao and vodka soaked in hot chili pepper.)

Re: Is beauty a cultural fabrication?

What we find beautiful is primarily a function of culture and environment. Who's looking also matters a lot, which is why numerical scores for beauty are very imprecise - beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. http://i.imgur.com/WhtGC7Ql.jpg *ahem* But no, I don't think these campaigns are inspiring...

Re: STEM or STEAM?

To provide a bit of further context: most of the resources I've seen have pointed at STEAM as a form of curricular planning, basically what rowan was saying about adding the skills of art and design to STEM education in college and at earlier stages. In other news, I think it's great some engineerin...
