bad reasons for having a baby

Okay, let's get this clear from the start. This thread is not about your sister's reasons, your neighbor's reasons, or your neighbor's sister's wife's lover's reasons. Only post ones that you have considered through your very own head. You may have acted on them or not. Being a bad reason for you do...

Re: How to deal with opinionated toddlers (or babies or kids)

Discipline in the form of belts, switches, rulers, and hands aren't going to help a situation that is ultimately an annoying developmental phase. I don't see them helping any situation unless the anticipated outcome is child protective services taking the kid away. I could see how someone might sugg...

Re: do you have dice with more than six sides?

Not really a story: My most recent example is probably my most common example. We used to "ask The Great Potato" (flip a coin) to decide which movie to watch from a list. But this only worked if we limited the list to the power of two. We've tried using cards, but the mechanics are clunky....

Happy spacefemmiversary, Storage! If I could, I would give you a squirrel's hoard and maybe a hoard of squirrels.

Re: How to deal with opinionated toddlers (or babies or kids)

I have a demanding toddler. Sometimes I'm told to use more positive adjectives, like resilient instead of stubborn and maybe that will make me feel better about the situation. We have a similar dynamic that the kid doesn't have separation anxiety (there's no problem when I leave for work or class) b...

Yes, and they are so useful beyond games. Dice are a major decision making tool in this household.

Re: Where will you be in five years?

Sometimes I dream about moving back to the United States. But unless one of the things that hasn't happened in the last six years preventing that happens, I don't see it happening. More realistic but still dreaming, I expect to be living on some acreage with sheep.

Re: Nails or screws?

depends on the application? I've been really into Chicago screws lately. I've started using them for buttons. Wait what? This sounds cool! Any pics of examples? I'm sorry, I don't have a picture. I used them for the button fly on some pants I made for my spouse, and intend to keep doing the same. T...

My first very own pet was a dwarf hamster named Zazoo. I think it died of a heart attack thanks to a family cat.

Edit: Nice try Spacebot, but this question will not help you access my bank account.

Re: What was the weirdest food you've ever eaten?

I have a hard time picking superlatives. I've had a lot of food that's strange to my American palate since moving here. Mämmi is a seaonal (Easter) rye porridge that a lot of people hate and is unlike anything I've eaten before (I got lots of Finnish points for liking it). I've eaten sodium chloride...

Re: Just Can't Let It Go

Stuff around gender role prescription, especially among babies and toddlers gets to me. When my then two-year-old was jumping in every puddle the kid could see, I received the comment "He's all boy!" twice. Once along with the woman telling me how she loved jumping in puddles when she was ...

Re: Happiest Baby on the Block

This was given to me by my maternity nurse along with two other books in Finnish. I read something my cousin gave me about wrapping babies. If I had the option, I would have scoured the library, and instead I read a lot of articles via the Internet. That was something that my spouse hated because I...

permaculture

One of the places I browse on the web a lot is the permaculture forum at permies.com . When the term permaculture was coined, it was founded on the principles: care of people, care of the earth, and redistribution of surplus. I see permaculture used as a buzz word, and not always following those pri...

Re: Studies That Prove Link Between Autism and Vaccines

I didn't look through all of these, and don't have much insight when looking at methods, but a few that I did look at didn't make the claim that vaccines caused autism. A couple concluded that a closer study was warranted due to inconclusive data. A couple couple concluded that studies concluding th...

Re: Muscle cramps

An old runners tip is to lie with your feet elevated way up against a wall after a run. It helps the lactic acid that builds up on muscles and causes cramps to circulate through the blood steam as opposed to pooling in the legs. But that advice only helps if the reason for cramps is aerobic exercise...

Re: what are you reading?

PPA was probably a really stupid thing to read. I find myself just wanting fairly light fluff with Dragons. It's surprisingly hard to find something that scratches that itch. PPA as in aphasia? I'm bad at acronyms and when I looked that one up, I found a lot of business buzz words, some computation...

Re: uninvited house guests

Spiders are always welcome to stay (non poisonous around here). I kill silverfish. I hunt down mosquitoes (they come in through our bathroom vent). I try to leave gnats alone until they cross some threshold of population explosion and then I hunt them down. I catch and release, seasonally. If they w...
