Re: How NOT to help parents with a newborn

Don't show up empty-handed. Getting out of the house to the shops when you have a newborn is so hard, so anything that means that you don't have to is super-helpful. Bring some spare packs of baby wipes, or a new onesie (so that the washing can be put off another day) or an easy to heat meal. And do...

Re: What's the worst form of data entry you've ever experienced?

^ This! Data entry for school reports is the worst, especially when I've already got that data in electronic form somewhere else. I've had experience with a few different reporting systems and have yet to come across one that is sensible. Drop-down menus for % scores? Brilliant!

Re: Ouch

I have freakishly long second toes (longer than my big toes) and sometimes manage to catch them on the floor at trip over them. It always happens at least once or twice at the start of summer when I start walking around barefoot. It hurts like hell and also makes me feel really stupid, like I should...

Re: Advice for surviving the last days of pregnancy?

Looking back now, I think I'd recommend against thinking or reading much about the baby while playing the waiting game. The next few months will be occupied with nothin' but baby whether you like it or not, so you can think and read about baby stuff then. Once all the practical stuff is in place, ju...

Re: it gets better thread for parents

9 months old - is mobile and curious enough to entertain herself for a little bit. She will go from grabbing an object to throwing it away, crawling to something else, banging it on the floor, crawling to something else, putting it in her mouth, crawling back to first object, repeat with variations....

I would dearly love to ditch my current insomniac tendencies and sleep for a solid 7-8 hours for a change. Even 6 would be nice.

Re: what's the last movie you saw?

^ I'm with you on Batman vs Superman. I didn't really want to see it, but it was what happened to be running when I had time to kill. I kind of enjoyed it, but thought the script was all over the place and the ending was just a mess. Still, I quite liked some of the batman stuff. However, aside from...

Re: Pap smears suck!

I've become a reluctant connoisseur of pap smears due to having a few abnormal results that weren't serious, but meant I needed more frequent checks. The level of comfort/pain definitely is very dependent on the doctor. They aren't comfortable, but I don't think they should be painful, or at least n...

Re: I use to be friends with my body but now my body hates me:

I've been sick continuously since the start of February. It's just exhausting, particularly since I don't usually get sick. I really suck at being unwell.
In an odd way, knowing that other people are feeling/have felt as crap as I am makes me feel a bit better (misery loves company, I suppose).

Vikram Seth's 'A suitable boy'. My copy is 1474 pages! Having said that, I don't remember it being an especially difficult read.

Sanders hasn't faced national Republican opposition, and I'm genuinely worried about how the "socialist" label would play in the general election. As a total outsider watching the coverage of the primaries from another country thousands of miles away, this is what stands out to me as the ...

Re: CDC: all women 15-44 should avoid alcohol in case they're already pregnant

Not only is it an awful generalisation, it's completely paternalistic and appears to assume that women aren't smart enough to make decisions for themselves. Given that they are talking about alcohol crossing the placenta, and the placenta doesn't develop until well after you'd miss a period, it seem...

^ I've heard of this and it sounds really awful. Did she sleepwalk with it? I know someone whose 2 year old did and he said the only way to describe it was that it looked like some kind of demonic possession. I am so glad I know about this because it would freak me out completely if it started and I...

Advice on dealing with a sick baby

So I've been back at work for almost a month, and bub has spent some of her time in daycare. Not entirely coincidentally, she's also had some kind of illness, virus or bug almost continuously for the last three and a half weeks. It's been a pretty steep learning curve for me, I've never really dealt...

Re: warning: when your baby sleeps through the night...

Spacefem, did you use some kind of weird voodoo to see what was happening in my house last night? Bub has been a great overnight sleeper since around the four month mark but last night was attempting to crawl around the cot at 3.10. It took more than an hour to get her settled again. Her rolling pha...

Re: Advice for surviving the last days of pregnancy?

I watched a lot of Netflix, taught myself to knit and made baby hats, and did loads of baking. Neither of the latter two have happened since she arrived. Also, once she was a week overdue I started writing letters of complaint to my local politician (seriously, I think I was going a bit nuts). Bub i...

Re: spacefem's guide to baby-led weaning

Thanks for the advice everyone. We had a bit more success after a second go, I did some steamed carrot sticks as well, and I think she liked the variety in shapes and colour. I think I did originally cut the apple too small as she had an easier time with the carrot. Some even made it into her mouth!...

Re: spacefem's guide to baby-led weaning

Wondering if I'm doing something wrong here... Bub likes eating and has done since she was around 5 months, although just purees and mashed food. She's fine with lumpy food and likes a bit of texture. However, now that she's six months and I've tried some finger food, she's not interested in it at a...

Re: Pancake Day

I don't need a special day for pancakes, I'd happily eat them all the time (and do...). This recipe is my go-to: 3/4 cup self-raising flour sifted with 2 tablespoons caster sugar. Add 1/2 cup of milk and one beaten egg and mix. Stir in 30g melted butter, then add half a cup of blueberries. Cook in a...

Re: What's changed about you in the last five years?

Wow, I've just realised that the last five years have been huge! Got married, got a dog, bought a house, got published, had a kid, did some travelling. But it does feel like I'm pretty much the same person as I was five years ago (in a good way) whereas when I look back at some of my younger years i...
