Re: Workplace seating arrangements - WWYD?

Can you ask her? Not customarily with new hires. Usually a spot is assigned ahead of time to set up computer/phone. Plus, the new hire wouldn't have enough background regarding cube-mate personalities or the benefits of a mentorship relationship, so she'd mostly have to go by whether she'd prefer t...

Re: New Here, Hi There

Welcome, sisehtopyh! Which levels did you teach? Only chemistry or other science subjects as well? I'm not familiar with the pharmaceutical industry at all, but if/when you do want to "get back in the game", a freshly minted degree seems like one of the easier ways to break in if you don't...

Re: what do you dislike about children?

They will zero in on whatever is inappropriate and latch on to it. They don't remember the stuff you're trying to teach them, but they will remember the word 'thong' for years and trot it out at the most inopportune moments. HA this goes on my list of things that crack me up about children - no fil...

Re: Workplace seating arrangements - WWYD?

Can you ask if she'd prefer a corner cubicle or one in the middle of other people? I would be inclined to go with spot 1, since that sounds like a better place to put any new employee given the mentoring personality of the cubicle mate. No. Her cubicle has to be set up with a computer and phone lin...

They don't respond to reason. Well, at least my reasoning. I also dislike inability to self-wipe butt.

Workplace seating arrangements - WWYD?

Hypothetical "What would you do?" question of the day: Scenario: You are a the supervisor of a group of 7 men and 1 woman in a male dominated field (avg. 15% female). You have a new hire -- a woman -- and you have 2 possible locations for her (see diagram). * In spot 1, she would be sittin...

Re: how do you travel?

We're traveling with a 2 yo and a 4yo this week. A 2 hr flight connecting to a 4 hr flight. I broke down and got tablets and headphones, now I just need to load them with movies/games. I'm packing treats and stickers and crayons and notepads. I'm almost positive I'll be carrying on a (very compactab...

Re: Harassment in the Workplace training

First of all, we need to look at what goes on beyond training... Yes, like Rowan said, this is mandatory training to (at least) all employees with certain job responsibilities. It has been mandatory the entire time I've worked here, and I was mandatory at my previous place of employment. This kind ...

Re: Savings account interest rate question

Neither.
0.01%=0.0001 (and I was surprised to see this is an *actual* rate offered by some banks.)
If, on the other hand, your post had a typo and you meant the bank is advertising Gross% of 0.1, then that would be 0.001.

Re: Unsolicited relationship advice

Ah, my bad. If I had read "People in relationships develop expectations of their partners," I might have been semi inclined to logically "debate"... But after I read "Women feel that their man should cater to them..." I assumed logic was out the window since we're runni...

Re: how do you travel?

Ugh. Traveling with infants and toddlers is a pain in the ass. My kids are a couple of months shy of being 2 and 4 and I have to take 2 flights totaling about 8-11 hrs travel time to go see any family. To me traveling with kids is like riding a roller coaster. If it was up to me alone, I wouldn't do...

If you're into virtual hugs from quasi-stranger femmer semi-n00bs, a virtual mega hug for you. Or we can break stuff.

Anywho. Shit. I hope every day gets a little bit less sucky.

Re: What photos have you framed?

People. It's only people at my place. The least people-y framed photo I framed was a black & white closeup selfie of my then bf's eye that came out super sharp with a really neat reflection, and I framed it for a photo contest ("honorable mention"). But then afterwards, it gave me a cr...

Re: what are you reading?

I liked Eragon too. Did you get to Brisingr? I... It was bad. It felt like he was trying too hard to come up with a Tolkien-like world and went off on a tangent with the dwarves and uuuggghhh it just dragged on and on until it made me lose the will to read. I even tried having it read to me. No dice.

Harassment in the Workplace training

Every year my place of employment requires employees to complete recurrent general harassment/sexual harassment training in some form or other. The training provides some scenarios with simulated dialogue and then company policy pointers. The main scenario played out this year is along the lines of ...
