Re: what are you particular about?

Oh geez. Fucking everything. It's a bit of a problem sometimes. This is my answer too. One thing that really makes people perplexed is the way I spread things on toast. I have to cover the whole surface area of the side, and it has to be an even thickness. Consequently, takes me like five minutes t...

Re: Gender and racial biases in professor's newsvideo

When I first watched it, my brain vaguely registered that the woman was Asian, but that was it. My main thought was 'Oh, I bet she just really needed to pee and in the few seconds it took her, the kids were out of her sight and wreaking havoc.' (I have a kid and this happens to me regularly). I shar...

Re: stuffed animals

My brother's favorite stuffed animal was a thing we called 'gerbil'. I actually don't know what it was because we found it in the street (not sure what my mum was thinking in allowing him to pick it up, let alone keep it) and it had already lost an eye and was unidentifiable, but he became really at...

Re: Are you a good listener?

Weirdly, I'm a better listener when I wear my glasses. Having more visual stimulus helps me remember more and pay attention, as well as be able to perceive better. So I guess I'm maybe not a good listener since I need the visual input..?

Re: Ariel wasn't a patriarchal shill of a character?

The interpretation in that post is certainly the way I understood the film when I was a child. I'm not sure if I recall correctly, but doesn't she need to get Eric to fall in love with her so she can get her voice back? I mean, she likes him of course, but if she had her voice maybe she wouldn't hav...

Re: Why are men so ready to complain...

There's more fun facts about guys and peeing, but I'll leave it here. I want to know the other fun facts! Me too! I never realised sitting down on a toilet could be so uncomfortable for people with a penis (and sitting down in public toilets in general is not pleasant). Seems like the toilet is rea...

"I don't want you to French kiss me." I didn't think I would have this problem with a ten month old.

Re: Why are men so ready to complain...

I've been in spaces (mainly stadiums) where their idea of a urinal was a trough with no dividers. That's the way my little league field did it. And perhaps my experience is colored by (as a kid) having an adult near there ask to see my penis, but having no enclosure isn't a safe idea. If we're talk...

Yes always. Unless I have Nutella. Then I don't need butter.

Re: what temperature do you set your space?

I've never had control over the heat in my apartment. A few winters ago it was so cold in the bathroom that when I left the tap running overnight, it froze completely. That was a miserable winter. At my mother-in-laws, there's a thermostat in the bedroom. She keeps her house pretty cold, but I'd pre...

Re: Why are men so ready to complain...

Fun fact: went to a restaurant yesterday and they had four unisex rooms one of which was a urinal. Which makes a hell of a lot more sense then this. Except that doesn't make sense either because a urinal is not unisex. I mean, I guess it could be possible for a woman to pee in there - I haven't tri...

Feminism and pro-life

Yesterday I saw a promoted article on Facebook about 'pro-life feminists' feeling 'sidelined' by the Women's March. One woman quoted in the article said just because she doesn't believe in pro-choice doesn't mean she isn't supporting women in other ways and it was 'unfair' to take feminism away from...

Re: New parent help/suggestions

I agree with everything lyra211 said and will add a few more. Things you don't need: Anything soft, fluffy or furry. My baby couldn't care less about minky blankets and soft toys. Plus they seem more gross to clean when they get covered in bodily fluids. Clothes that look like adult clothes. It's so...

Re: Activities for 1-3 yo's

I find theimaginationtree.com has lots of inspiring ideas. Some look like they take quite a bit of prep, but if you're doing it for a whole class then it might be worth it. You can sort activities by age as well so it's easier to search.

Re: Academic redshirting

Interesting. I didn't know there was a name for this. This didn't happen where I grew up (nor did kids skip a grade or get held back if they over- or under-performed). I remember saying to my mum how all the 'dumb' kids in class had their birthdays in the summer (our year ran September-August) and s...

My turn to hijack. The toddler-bootyshort style must have been thought up by the same idiot who thinks T shirts on a 6-month old are a good idea. I mean, they're cute because they're small, but totally impractical because they ride up and end up in his armpits exposing his belly. I thought the most ...

Re: kids' obsessions

I had obsessive tendencies (still do although they manifest differently) so if I had a couple of items within the same category, they would become a collection and I'd add to it at every opportunity I could. Thus, I ended up with a bunch of owl figurines, sheep toys, souvenir erasers, pencil sharpen...

Re: Feminism in Popular Cinema

I think people need to be alot more selective with what stories they call feminist. How do we classify a film as feminist? Are there key features it has to have? Certain subject matter? I've always sort of felt a movie was feminist if it has a female protagonist who could just as easily be male wit...

Re: Putting the "man" in "mani/pedi"

I've always felt a little uncomfortable in salons, partly because I find the small talk awkward and partly because I have this irrational fear that people will notice I don't fit in. I mean, I never really figured out how to put makeup on effectively or had the patience to do my hair nicely so when ...

Re: Let's talk about pets, baby!

I have a cat. She used to live with us in the basement and enjoy watching the birds from ground level (there was once a flock of turkeys outside which freaked her out somewhat). Now that we've moved to the third floor she's gone crazy. I think she's overstimulated with all the natural light and choi...

I wish I could drink coffee, but I have a caffeine intolerance - I get all dizzy and nauseous and faint. Even green tea, with such a small amount of caffeine, makes me feel kind of bleurgh if I have it on an empty stomach. At least it's an excuse that I just have to have biscuits with my tea.
