Re: Women's self defense

Proven serious threat is often too late. You're not going to do all that much damage to a throat with your keys, but the serious attempt is going to make an attacker think thrice about their chosen target.

Re: Yuck Yuck Yuck - continued from "Ranting"

I was thinking of general stranger interactions. I do live in an urban environment where it's not uncommon to double check you're on the right streetcar or how exactly to get to some landmark. Funnily enough I dropped something yesterday and a young man chased me down a block to give it back, that w...

Re: Women's self defense

I've never taken an official one. But as a kid I got a bunch through school and brownies and such but those were about how to defend yourself as a child. In high school one of the Phys Ed sections was two weeks of defense (the only part of phys Ed that wasn't a waste of my time). I felt that was ver...

Re: Yuck Yuck Yuck - continued from "Ranting"

I think there's a distinct difference between being afraid of men (which I'm not) and being afraid of men who approach me when I'm by myself (meaning not only am I personally alone but there's no one else around). I'm also pissed off that politeness dictates that I talk back to a man who is talking ...

My partner and I are reading Lamb (the gospel according to Biff Christ's childhood friend) to the baby. So that's pretty much all I'm reading right now

Re: Yuck Yuck Yuck - continued from "Ranting"

It's really hard, I'm not sure most men really understand. My sister recently "made a friend" while waiting for the bus when a guy bummed a cigarette. He kept talking to her until the bus got there, got on with her and got off at her stop (while at the bus stop he mentioned he was going in...

Re: do you live near a willow tree?

Yea I live fairly to a park that uses a massive willow as one of it's focal points and a small park made up almost exclusively of willows (which are lit up from the bottom at night and I admit looks pretty awesome). I believe there are also a couple in the park a bit north of me.

Re: What animals are you afraid of?

My totally irrational fear is Orcas. Irrational because as far as I know there's been one attack of orcas against a human in the wild and it was a case of mistaken identity (They thought he was a seal). Also because I live in Ontario and it's not like I'm going to ever encounter an orca in my day to...

Re: Dredging Up The Rape Culture Conversation Part 4Billion

I've never personally researched the Nordic rape epidemic. But when I've asked some Swedish people I know they all kinda shrug it off with the reasoning of "We consider a wider variety of things sexual assault, and women here are more comfortable reporting incidents." which kinda sounds li...

Fake pockets! Verifying if the pockets are real or not is something I should have to do every time I buy pants.

Re: Male birth control study

I don't think that's a woman/man thing so much as a person/person thing. I don't remember to take my pills every day. I wouldn't rely on my partner to for something as important as birth control simply because I wouldn't, not because he (or his gender) fail at pills.

Re: Have you been in a fight?

When I was in grade five a boy ran down the hallway and banged a friend of mine with one of the plastic recycling bins. I went after him (I didn't recognize him so didn't want him to get away) and when I grabbed him he turned around swinging. I learned a valuable lesson that day, I may not be strong...

Re: Mansplaining - Signs and symptoms.

Mansplaining is by definition a gendered act though. It's a man explaining something to a woman who he's been told has an expertise in the subject because it's inconceivable to him that a woman would know more about it than him. In the original article the man literally explains a book to the author...

Re: Mansplaining - Signs and symptoms.

All those fancy logic classes I took at a prominent university all gone to waste... I still don't understand how masculinity = asexuality isn't conflating gender with sexuality. And I don't see any explanation for why/how carnal pleasure is feminine. An erect penis is many things but it never struck...

Hiding behind "deeper truths" and "enlightenment" is a mighty convenient way of saying you don't feel the need to use logic to make your points.

Re: Self Defense - Stand your Ground

I'm pretty sure liberals believe in guns. No one is questioning the existence of them. Also the unfortunate truth is that just because an act is moral doesn't make it legal, and just because it's legal doesn't make it moral. Furthermore, morality and convenience often have nothing to do with one ano...

A - Insulting asexuals doesn't help your argument. B - Men not understanding trans women probably has more to do with the fact that they aren't a trans woman (like you aren't asexual). One could argue misogyny is what makes it so dangerous to be a trans woman, and that men aren't socialize to be emp...

Re: what's your favorite thing that is pink?

I'm still a little confused that someone thinks the flavour of popsicles is dictated by the dye used and not the artificial flavouring. I don't know what flavouring is used in pink popsicles but I doubt red #40 tastes that good.
