Re: What major life experience changed you?

It's hard to decide which experiences are more life changing. Moving from Hong Kong to Sydney was an important one. I moved there for my last two years of high school, and it was a much-needed change because I have been slacking off at school all along even though I had good grades, and the new envi...

Re: Happy 14th spacefemmiversary The MoUsY spell-checker!

Thanks, Sonic#. Even though I rarely post here these days, I'm happy to see that this website is still around. This is where I learnt about the concept of feminism, got the encouragement to take my school career advisor's recommendation to study engineering, and spent a lot of time playing word game...

Beads, to go on my mobile phone strap. Too bad they come in a big pack and I only needed a few.

Tape, from my own skin.

(I like how there's a thread about surgery in the forum at the same time.)

Re: have you been to a protest?

I've showed up at many of them, but I've never been particularly involved in organising them. I generally don't have much time to prepare placards, so I usually bring an A3 map holder with printed messages . (Link to Facebook photo of me holding the map holder placard) I once went to two back-to-bac...

Re: What clubs were you a member of in High School?

I wasn't particularly keen on committing to extra-curricular activities back then, but I was in choir and programming club for one term (and then I moved overseas and went to a different school, where I didn't join any clubs). In a way, I'm making up for it now by being a member of lots of Meetup gr...

Me too. Back when I first started cycling, I used to wash my bike every now and then. These days, I ride the bike almost every day, so it would just get dirty again right away anyway.

I wash my helmet every now and then.

Re: how to make friends in a new town

An obvious one would be to get to know your colleagues. They might be able to introduce you to other people, and it generally gets easier once you already know a few people. Have a look at Meetup.com for organised groups in the area. By definition, people who are on that site are actively looking to...

Re: down with beige walls!

Pale green, probably. Maybe black, just because as a kid I was never allowed to have black walls that I always wanted. (I read in my room, so I wasn't allowed to have it too dark. I'm also a lot more sensitive to light than either of my parents are, so I was always given too much light (to the point...

Re: Web addiction

Let's see... My pinned tabs are Gmail, Facebook, and Google Reader (542 feeds). Some of the blogs I follow only have partial RSS feeds, so I do have to open the link to read the rest. Sometimes I end up with a huge backlog of those. In my current tab group (for forums and other similar things) I hav...

Re: are you a picky eater?

I'm a picky eater but I can't actually name that many specific things I don't like. Let's see... Coconut, black beans, and prawns. I generally don't like vegetables (but will eat them anyway), and am kind of allergic to soy. On a more frivolous note, I have a reputation for liking chocolate (far mor...

Re: From Penelope Gaines (of QC fame) twitter feed:

This quote comes to mind.
This is how languages die out: Over time, every single word in the language becomes slang for something dirty. People didn’t forget to speak Latin: they just got tired of all the snickering whenever they spoke.

I like the idea, but in practice I find it inconvenient because I often copy and paste text from different pages to search for something specific, and if I take too long, it becomes really annoying.

Re: Video Phone

I'm wondering if it might be different in the US. I'm not sure if it's a result of the different transmitting that US and Australian/European/Japanese/(probably other places) use, but I've never seen a phone from the US with video calling. My hand-me-down phone from a previous study abroad student ...

I thought I've replied in this thread before, but apparently I haven't. The first thing that comes to mind is, haven't mobile phones with video call capabilities been common for a few years? My old phone from 2007 had it. All those commercials say that you still need an internet connection (and prob...

Why pay for bottled water when I can just bring a reusable bottle and refill it for free at a tap?

I do buy bottled water on the days when I forget my bottle or lose it, but that doesn't happen too often. Often I manage to get free bottles of water at various places too.

Having grown up in Hong Kong, my first language is Cantonese. I've also studied French and Mandarin for 4 years in high school. I was in the top class for bo...

Re: Calling All Activists

The one type of activism that I'm committed to is cycling activism, and bike-related protests tend to be done on bike, so I don't think of them as protests. I do usually go to Reclaim The Night each year, but in Sydney, it's on the last Friday of October, so it always clashes with Critical Mass. (Th...

I did have a kind of "coming of age" moment recently when I got a letter from the council about a meeting regarding traffic calming plans. I couldn't go because I had an exam the day after. Not being able to go to a council meeting because of exams at least sounds more grown-up than not be...
