Im feminist but....

Postby feministqeen » Tue May 29, 12:54 2012

First i want to say i am not a troll. I have lurked these forums for a long time, and i created an account to participate in discussions.
I have made some thoughts in the time i have been reeding here.

Even though i am a feminist girl, and believe that we should have equal rights as men, there are some facts we cannot change:

- Men are physically stronger ( Better at any sports imaginable. If u think otherwise, why dont women compete against men? Even in chess and curling which takes only skill, not strenght!! )
- Men are smarter (im sad to say but: who invented the computer u are using? who invented facebook for u to use? who invented airplanes, cars, engines, cellphones, satelites, tv, radio, boats. I mean men invented everything. Can someone mention something a woman invented that is of any use? I would really like challenge u to mention something)
- Which sex wins the nobelprices for math, physics or any other subject?

What are ur thoughs about these points? I think men are biologically superior to women, but that has nothing to do with feminism.

Good one.

Gender is fluid and should not be emphasized. It's all bullshit. Those are my thoughts on the issue.

Welcome to the board! Have a cheeseit. :cheeseit:

I don't think you can make arguments about biological inequality based on situations of historical, persistent social inequality. It's like claiming that the glass is half-full when I have my hand in it - unless I know the exact volume of my hand, I can't gauge where the level will be at. Similarly, I cannot make claims about biological capability when social circumstances allowed men to be educated and to have access to stations that facilitated invention and exercise.

Sonic got to my main point before I did, so to reiterate: men's seemingly greater achievements are a result of social context, not inherent capability.

In regards to sports, there are examples of women beating men in direct competition; for example, the very famous "Battle of the Sexes" 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. I tend to think that women and men don't compete directly simply because we've set up rules dictating that they don't, not because it would be that much of a mismatch.

As for what women have done, let's start with your life. Have you ever voted? Gone to college? Held a job? Rented an apartment by yourself? You can thank women who fought for women's rights. But well before that, women have been artists, writers, scientists, musicians, leaders - women have always done everything imaginable really, just in way lower numbers and usually having a much harder time of it than men.

Hello, 'not a troll'. I think you should become familiar with the great achievements of many women, who invented all kinds of things and made great achievements in physics and mathematics etc, even in the face of social inequity. We just don't hear about them as much (and of course they were fewer, due to the aforementioned social inequity, which does still exist quite pervasively).

Also, I personally don't think that Facebook should be used as a brilliant invention. Particularly given its original context.

Bored.

Obvious troll is obvious.

Things women have invented: liquid paper, dishwashers, circular saw, kevlar, world's first disposable cell phone, windshield wipers, COBOL computer language, non-reflective glass, the world's first anti-fungual anti-biotic, maritime signal flares, the home diabetes test, countless pharmaceutical drugs, vacuum packed canning process, gas heating furnance, discoverer of stem cells, the pill, etc...

Keep in mind that in most of the western world, women were not even persons until just over 100 years ago. So how can you expect there to be a diverse history of female inventors that is equal to that of men? They would have had to overcome huge social obstacles before beginning their inventive processes.

Patents can't be issued to non-persons.

What is the point of this discussion again? You claim you believe in equal rights between genders; so then what does anything in the rest of your post have to do with, well, anything? What does trying to argue that one gender is better than another accomplish? Certainly not equality; establishing the hierarchy of “good, better, best” serves only to value some individuals over others. Also, you most certainly don’t want intelligent discussion; making broad sweeping troll-like claims that could be dispensed with a 10-second Google search hardly makes for a good stance on which to build a discussion. Once again, I ask, what is the point? What would you hope to accomplish with this discussion? Even if people were to miraculously agree with you, what have you gained? If your point were valid, then the conclusion would be “hey! Women are equal, but inferior!” So then what? What would you gain from such a conclusion?

My 'thoughs' on this point: no one wins the nobelprice since that isn't a real thing. Believing that one gender is superior to another is not consistant with any feminist view. Perhaps you need to dig a bit deeper about your viewpoints?

Also, Jocelyn Bell should have gotten the physics nobel prize - and many physicists were angry that she didn't. But she was a graduate student, and although it was her discovery, the prize went to her advisor. Also Roslind Franklin did not get it even though it was her data and her theory (stolen - literally - by Watson & Crick, who published it before she could. Oh yeah, and then she died before it was handed out, and it's not awarded posthumously.)

The nobel prizes are full of things like that.

prior to the invention of birth control, most women spent their would-be-career years pregnant, nursing, or recovering from childbirth. if you've had a baby, you'll know that this throws some real kinks in your schedule.

so given that skill, I'm not sure what you mean by "biologically superior". numerous tests have proven that men and women's brains aren't all that different. men are stronger, but elephants are stronger than any of us, should we start electing them president? or at least, we could have a government run by professional wrestlers. it'd be very superior, by your definition.

I played on a provincial waterpolo team when I was 18 (closer to a man's physical peak than a woman's). I was on the women's team, and we consistently SMOKED the men's team, even though both teams consistently won gold medals at all the tournaments.

Just thought I'd add that in, since I don't like being called weak simply because I'm a female.

I have heard that might have a lot more to do with the fact that men generally do more dangerous things and are much more likely to die because of them, which can be attributed to... *drum roll*... socialization! So all the men that die at age 20-30 in work accidents in construction or the military or wherever else they are overrepresented really brings down the average. But perhaps that stat accounts only for natural deaths, idk.

I'd like to point out the irony of computers heading the list of things men invent. Who invented the concept of iteration (and implemented it to an extent) that's running your computers again? Or would you like to code every action out by hand?

Give them their credit. Men are biologically superior when it comes to combat, but that has nothing to do with skill. So although, men might be fat superior in a sport like combat or football, they still have the possibility of equalling or surpassing the skills of men in certain orlther sports like tennis or bowling.

Women are just as smart as men, slew can sit here lusting inventors all day, but it doesn't matter.

You're wrong.

You're created with either the XY or XX chromosome, and that determines your sex and whether your gonads transform into ovaries or testes.

Everyone just looks the same while in the womb due to lack of genitalia, but as long as they have the XY chromosome, they are male.

Women on average live about 5-7 years longer than most males, but this is only because men are often forced into doing more physically daunting tasks during their lifetime because they are biologically more able to than females.
Arguing that females have biological superiority because they live longer on average does not empower women, it promotes misandry, something I'm trying to cure.

Just because women carry children doesn't men they create them. Children are created through reproduction which requires both male and female gametes.

By entertaining this troll and trying to provide 1-ups for women against you all are going against the core of feminism which is the peaceful empowerment of women.
