I started in my first-ever non-manual-labor position this week! I was promoted within the company (rehab and mental health services) but I'm mostly a switchboard operator with other clerical duties.
YAY: No more scrubbing toilets! A job that FINALLY requires me to use my brain (sometimes)! I get to wear real clothes instead of the "hi, I clean toilets" brown uniform shirt and khakis! People look me in the eye now (sometimes)! I'm actually part of the process to admit addicts seeking treatment into our services! A minor pay raise! Part time is much better for school and my mental health!
FFFF@#%$&: Whiny office ladies. Bad office communication. Callers can get nasty when they don't hear the answer they want--swearing, death threats, etc. Same company, same problems. Harder to request time off.
But the pros heavily outweigh the cons, at least. Especially the fact that it is part-time. My therapist could tell that even when I was doing better, the one thing that was really dragging me down emotionally was my job. I started feeling quite a bit better once they offered me the new position and now that I'm transitioning I'm almost obnoxiously happy. The honeymoon will be over soon but things are looking up at least.

ARRR!
and it sounds like it will be a much better job all round even once that's worn off
