Can't Fight The Moonlight

Postby Nech » Fri Jan 6, 8:48 2017

Does the song seem rapey to anyone else? I don't think before this week I've really listened to the song (and not for over a decade at the very least). Was this just a late 90's early 2000's theme I never noticed?
Where there's smoke, there's fire. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. So just shut up, and bring some water.

Here is the lyrics

Under a lovers' sky
Gonna be with you
And no one's gonna be around
If you think that you won't fall
Well just wait until
Til the sun goes down
Underneath the starlight, starlight
There's a magical feeling, so right
It'll steal your heart tonight
You can try to resist
Try to hide from my kiss

But you know
But you know that you can't fight the moonlight
Deep in the dark
You'll surrender your heart
But you know
But you know that you can't fight the moonlight
No, you can't fight it

It's gonna get to your heart
There's no escape from love
Once a gentle breeze
Weaves it's spell upon your heart
No matter what you think
It won't be too long

Til your in my arms
Underneath the starlight, starlight
We'll be lost in the rhythm, so right
Feel it steal your heart tonight

Can be about rape but it definitely sounds like a consent issue.
And it did mention nonconsensual kissing, so I'll say sexual assault.

You reminded of this other song.

Baby It's Cold Outside (New consent version :P) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amK4U4pCTB8

Orig Lyrics -
I really can't stay (but baby, it's cold outside)
I've got to go away (but baby, it's cold outside)
This evening has been (been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice (I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
My mother will start to worry (beautiful what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor (listen to the fireplace roar)
So really I'd better scurry (beautiful please don't hurry)
But maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)
The neighbors might think (baby, it's bad out there)
Say what's in this drink? (no cabs to be had out there)
I wish I knew how (your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell (i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
I ought to say, no, no, no sir (mind if I move in closer?)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried (what's the sense in hurtin' my pride?)
I really can't stay (oh baby don't hold out)
But baby, it's cold outside
I simply must go (but baby, it's cold outside)
The answer is no (but baby, it's cold outside)
Your welcome has been (how lucky that you dropped in)
So nice and warm (look out the window at this dawn)
My sister will be suspicious (gosh your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door (waves upon the tropical shore)
My maiden aunts mind is vicious (gosh your lips are delicious)
But maybe just a cigarette more (never such a blizzard before)
I've gotta get home(but baby, you'd freeze out there)
Say lend me a coat(it's up to your knees out there)
You've really been grand (I thrill when you touch my hand)
But don't you see? (how can you do this thing to me?)
There's bound to be talk tomorrow (think of my lifelong sorrow)
At least there will be plenty implied (if you got pnuemonia and died)
I really can't stay (get over that old out)
Baby, it's cold
Baby, it's cold outside

This entire song has major consent issues. This song is a huge hit too.

Sounds more like he's describing irresistible lust than rape, but that's just me.
The artist's job is not to succumb to despair, but to find an antidote to the emptiness of existence. -W.A.

There are tons of songs and poems where seduction is imagined as co-opting a reluctant partner into having sex, which includes one partner not wanting it yet but their being convinced, or one partner playing as not wanting sex to keep up an act. For instance, the first stanzas of Aphra Behn's The Disappointment feel firmly nonconsensual today, but I also have to keep in mind that Behn's giving the woman Cloris considerable agency here:
Her Hands his Bosom softly meet,
But not to put him back design'd,
Rather to draw him on inclin'd,

Whilst he lay trembling at her feet;

to the point where she herself pushes the risk of nonconsent in order to tease him:

Her bright Eyes sweat, and yet Severe,
Where Love and Shame confus'dly strive,
Fresh Vigor to Lisander give :
And whispring softly in his Ear,
She Cry'd — Cease — cease — your vain desire,
Or I'll call out — What wou'd you do ?

My dearer Honour, ev'n to you,
I cannot — must not give — retire,
Or take that Life whose chiefest part
I gave you with the Conquest of my Heart.

I think scenes like this really become disturbing when I imagine the partner to be nonconsenting (or really saying "cease! cease!") and ask what he might do. What's the line between crying "cease" and meaning "cease" and crying "cease" and meaning "yes?" What are the safe words? How could a man in this culture respond to Cloris's refusal? This kind of seduction works in this situation for Cloris, Lysander, and Aphra Behn, and Behn focusing on Cloris's eventual disappointment more than Lysander's is remarkable, but on a grander scale they seem a part of a culture where maids might not be able to refuse. That makes me uncomfortable with the acting.

I think I'm hard on both of those songs because they make a lot of a woman giving way despite resistance, and the coded form of the seduction makes consent seem secondary.

Who can forget Sting's "Every Breath You Take" aka The Stalker Song?

Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watching you

and Duran Duran's "Hungry Like The Wolf":

In touch with the ground
I'm on the hunt down I'm after you
Smell like I sound I'm lost in a crowd
And I'm hungry like the wolf
Straddle the line in discord and rhyme
I'm on the hunt down I'm after you
Mouth is alive with juices like wine
And I'm hungry like the wolf

Stalked in the forest too close to hide
I'll be upon you by the moonlight side
Do do do do do do do dodo dododo dodo
High blood drumming on your skin it's so tight
You feel my heat I'm just a moment behind

and whenever I hear "Baby It's Cold Outside" I always get creepy feelings, too.

I'm trying to think of more popular songs, because I know there are a ton of them...
