How do you generally stand on political issues?

Postby spacefem » Wed Nov 1, 20:40 2006

I consider myself a libertarian. I always vote for the libertarian presidential candidate, and have supported other candidates as well. I don't want the government restricting reproductive rights, freedom of speech, due process, or marriage rights. I worked very hard to keep my state from passing an anti-gay marriage state constitution amendment... the amendment passed anyway, but I'm proud that I fought it.

Also, being a Christian has given me a strong sense of social justice. I think we need some form of welfare to take care of disadvantaged people. I don't think we have the right to treat someone differently just because they weren't born in this country. I don't think we have the right to keep someone in prison for five years without a trial because he might be a terrorist and terrorism is really scary. I'm insulted by Christian organizations who try to tell me that the most important political issues are abortion, gay rights, and euthanasia, when billions more are effected by poverty, malnutrition, poor education and lack of health care. I'm against the death penalty. I'm against the war.

Relatively lefty. I think we need to take care of the rest of humanity. I tend to vote ndp with the occasional liberal.

Left-leanings socially; right-leanings fiscally. Sometimes these conflict and usually social wins out over fiscal. (And I'll say that by "right-leanings," I don't mean these people who have forgotten all about about fiscal responsibility)

www.lp.org wrote:Are Libertarians liberal or conservative?

Libertarians are neither. Unlike liberals or conservatives, Libertarians advocate a high degree of both personal and economic liberty. For example, Libertarians agree with conservatives about freedom in economic matters, so we're in favor of lowering taxes, slashing bureaucratic regulation of business, and charitable -- rather than government -- welfare. But Libertarians also agree with liberals on personal tolerance, so we're in favor of people’s right to choose their own personal habits and lifestyles.

I like to think I'm quite liberal - 'an it harm none' sort of thing - but I know there is a very wide conservative streak that runs through me. I tend to support the Liberal Democrats because they haven't had a chance in power yet and I think they would do a marginally less worse job of the other two parties.

Aaaamen to that. I care about politics, probably like Storage notnearlyasmuchassheshould, but I feel I can't consider myself on the side of a certain political party because I don't know enough about any of them, their viewpoints keep changing left right and centre (excuse the pun) and it seems like leaning to any direction just means you fall over a lot. I'm definitely more left-wing than I am right-wing but I'm still not entirely sure what that means...

I'm a lefty in social issues (gay marrige = good!, abortion should be an option, seperation of curch and state is necessary to the nth degree). I'm not really sure what my opinions are in regard to economic issues though, I'll probably decide once I have to pay taxes and such.

I'm basically an anti-deficit lefty: socially libertarian, pro-public-education, pro-science, pro-academic-funding, pro-choice, sex-positive… fiscally I don't mind middling to high taxes to support a good state apparatus so long as we're not borrowing from our kids as well.

I can't stand theocrats and identity politics.

I tend to get involved in politics at the little committee level… health and safety, media, academic programs…

I'm Libertarian in theory, but social issues are at the moment significantly more important to me than fiscal issues, so on the Liberal/Conservative spectrum, I identify more strongly with the left. The Libertarian philosophy is the most appealing and logical, but I don't have the fiscal experience to take a well-educated and enthusiastic stance. Once I have to pay taxes I will probably be a stronger Libertarian.

I tend to swing GOP-moderate. I'm unsure on some topics because I like some bits of each side for some things, but then I really like some ideas from the GOP. I know its not good to not really know what my stance is but I try to stay informed and all and see which sides tend to be closest to them, which usually are the GOP.

have I said GOP enough?

:runs to own GOP corner:

**Edit**
I just took the political compass test and I'm Economic Left/Right: -1.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 1.28, which kind of surprised me because I live in such a highly Conservative state, but shows at how little time I've had to develop my own thoughts and ideas regarding society, gov't, etc.

If you want specifics, the Political Compass places me at -7.25, -7.64... so pretty far into the Libertarian Left, really.

I don't claim to know anything about economics, or politics, but I'm pro-choice, pacifist, very pro-human rights, and pro-community justice [and therefore against prison terms for non-violent, non-prolific offenders].

As far as UK politics goes, I've always voted Lib Dem in nonsensical mock elections [I don't /quite/ qualify to vote yet...], and I'd like think I'll do that in the future, but I'm frequently told that this mean I'm naive, and I'll change my mind when I grow up and, y'know, only care about taxes.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Hmm, the Political Compass has me at:
Economic Left/Right: -2.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.00

I'm pro-choice, a big believer in the seperation of church and state, pro-lowering-the-drinking-age-to-18-or-16-or-some-other-age-younger-than-what-I-am-now, anti-sports, pro-homosexuality, prefixhyphennoun.

Liberal.

That's a dumb reason to vote democrat instead of libertarian. Some libertarians believe in gun control... Democrats will never institute libertarian policies. Democrats probably won't ever institute very strict gun control, either. The two party system caters to the middle of the road. If you're off on the sidelines, perpetuating the two party system isn't going to help anyone.

I stand to the left. I stand to the right. I spin in circle in the center. I don't know what the hell I am.

I consider myself an independent (notice the little "i") purely because I fail to see the point in limiting yourself to the views of any particular party. I vote for what I believe in and who I think will be closest to achieving my own goals.

My vote goes to the National Barking Spider Resurgence Party.

Okay, so nobody's ever heard of them. They're fairly centrist and excessively snarky. Both of these suit me very well. And the presidential candidate from the last election actually responded to my e-mail letting them know they were awesome. Not that I imagine he gets a lot of mail, but it was still pretty sweet.

Snark. Politics need more good-natured snarkiness. And pie fights.
