I finally broke down and bought Operation Flashpoint, and then my damned evil friend went and said, "Oh, I've been playing mostly Battlefield 1942 now...", so I said to him, "Then YOU buy the game for me, you sadistic fuck! BLARG!"

I'm still waiting for him to buy it for me...

Well according to my best friend and confidante Ben I am VERY l337 BUT I think he is a little biased in that area. Being best friends with a person can skew their opinion of you and dim your faults. It's rather flattering, actually. It just like to type r0x0r your b0x0rs or however it's spelled, because I think it's hilarious. :)

Draak,

At the risk of looking ignorant (but what the heck, everyone already knows that), I'm still confused.

Earlier in the thread someone definted "1337" as:

"leet, as in elite. hacker / h4X0Rz sp34k"

Now you list:

"leet = elite"

I've never heard of the word "leet" either but am guessing that's slang for "elite?" OK, that leaves me thinking it means "elitist" or "snobbish" or some such. But where does "hacker" creep into the picture from the original definition?

Hopelessly confused (my usual state).......

Thanks for your reply!

radagast,

1337(leet), ph34r my wr4th(fear my wrath) and other such nonsense was started when gamers, hackers and script-kitties wanted to be more cool then the rest of the world. They think they are superior by using this new fangled way of writing the english language, leaving most of us, that are not elite, in the dark.

But BCG......

If you want me to include "1337" in the next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary of which I'm (NOT) the chief editor, you'll have to explain the etymology of "1337," i.e., why "1337" instead of "2448?"

Etymology was after all one of the many interests of the late Professor J.R.R. Tolkien, B.C.E., author of the popular book that was (somewhat) imitated in the making of the recent series of popular movies of the same name, Lord of the Rings.

The Professor, as he is rightly called, would be as disappointed as I to not know the history of such a popular euphemism of today's culture.

You guessed right. I still don't get it. How is "elite" derived from "1337?"

Ok, it's switching numbers and characters for letters. 1 is l, 3 is e. 1 obviously looks like an l, 3 is a capital E backwards. 7 is a T. So it spells lEET. Leet is just a shortened word used in online games to means very good, exceptional. This form of typing is called Leet Speak. 4 = R, $ = S, + or 7 = T, /\/\ = M, /\/ = N, etc.

Ah....... you are a wonder. Much of it I'd been able to made some sense from but not its actual late.

Now I get it. (I think. One never knows at my age.)

"Leet" is also a new word as I don't do online games. I'm a hopelessly boring person who has little time to spend on having fun as I try to figure out how these devices we call computers work...... and then to keep them working.

This old man with the slow brain bows and thanks you. :hat:

Leet is just a corruption of elite. Spell it phonetically, and then take off the long e sound at the beginning of the word.
