Who's your favourite violinist?

I probably like Menuhin the most, though I almost voted for Kennedy.

Yo Yo Ma is the only classical musician I know, and I keep forgetting that he doesn't play the violin. Itzhak Perlman does?? No way! I've heard of him.
Bork is too lazy to bother thinking up a witty signature. :polarbear:

Hilary Hahn. Easily. This brilliant young woman is in her 20's and is fantastic. I have a standing order at the iTunes Music Store to notify me of any of her new albums so that I can obtain them. I have all ten of them at present.

I like Perlman ever since he said that he uses a hankerchief to keep his sweat from staining his violin.

I know a few of these from wandering around Youtube, and really don't know enough about each to make a judgement. I picked Hilary Hahn, only because this performance of a Bach chaconne made me fall in love with Bach for the first time. I don't care that she plays it like it's Brahms, it gets me every time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uCdKH_zHVs

Not to go overkill on the links, but this Menuhin-Oistrakh performance of the Bach double violin concerto is too beautiful to pass:

Thanks for the link but I have to say that I disagree that the Bach concerto sounds like it's played in the style of Brahms. The style is highly reminiscent of her first album which featured two pieces by Bach.

You mean the chaconne? It may be reminiscent of her first album (which I haven't heard), but I think she creates a much more Romantic sound than a typically 'Baroque' performance. The sustained intensity, the vibrato... I have no problem with it and I think she's sensitive to Bach's writing, which is the main thing.

Yes I was referring to the piece you linked too and simply saying I didn't think it was played in the style of Brahams which you suggested.

Her first album (which was released as a tenth anniversary recently) has Bach's Partita #2 in D Minor and Partita #3 in E Major and she plays those two pieces, as she does the piece to which you linked, in the tradition of the baroque aspects of Bach's many concertos.

Cheers. :)

classical music is beautiful, but there is nothing like being a true composer and writer with God's gifting being developped

Dan David's songs are unique and truly originall.

The successfl recording violinist also has two books in circulation, which include Violin Made Easy, and Scales Made Easy
published by Mayfair Montgomery publishing
These are great for beginners and inspired violinists
