crossing the street

Sometimes I think too much about efficiency, so I unefficietly created this poll.

Is walking at an angle toward the direction I'm heading always inefficient for cars? For instance, maybe the time I take crossing a currently empty lane gives time for an intrepid car on the other side of a median to pass. Then I can cross that lane, whereas going perpendicular would've stopped that car.

I probably do block some cars though.

So I go at angles. I also run if people are coming and I can run.

If there aren't any cars coming, I'll walk at an angle. But, if there are cars coming I'll walk perpendicular so I don't get hit.
Bork is too lazy to bother thinking up a witty signature. :polarbear:

It all depends on the road; on busy roads I walk straight across as quickly as possible; on empty roads I walk diagonally... on the street I live on I sometimes walk across the road four times as that is the shortest route due to the way the road bends :P

Even when there's enough time for me to walk across, I run.

Not out of efficiency or courtesy. Mostly for self preservation.

If it's an empty intersection and I have good sight lines I might go kiddy corner, but mostly I just walk perpendicular. Except especially if there's a 4-way walk like that one intersection down by Pike's Market in Seattle. Then definitely kiddy corner.

^Huh, I always thought it was kitty corner, like a cat. I usually walk at an angle and feel guilty about it, but I also attempt to make eye contact with the driver and stare them down. I was hit by a car once when I had a walking signal and the car had a red light (and no turn on red). Not at speed, so no damage, but now I glare.

I always feel awkward when it's unclear if a car is going to stop for me. I'm not used to cars stopping for pedestrians where I've lived in the U.S., but now it's pretty common. So sometimes, I hang back so I can cross after the car passes. I didn't put that in the poll.
