Do you use boil bags?

Postby curlybae » Thu Jul 28, 19:23 2016

Are boil bags safe to use? Do you use them? Can anyone share some recipes? I'd like to try them but don't know what to cook.

I generally don't mix food with plastic whenever possible.

I don't cook food in plastic bags (even while camping), nor do I make candles, and I don't usually make shellfish either. Those were the top three things I found in google?

I think so because they are specifically made for boiling, right? I haven't tried cooking in a boil bag but I use them in freezing raw meat.

I don't know, what's a boil bag? I cook sous vide in cryovac bags all the time and that has been tested and deemed safe. Not sure if that has anything to do with what you are asking.

This is a boil bag. Is this the same as the cryovac bags you mentioned?

I think it is the same, and from my research there is no leaching of chemicals into your food when you cook with them. They are two ply, and the layer that contacts your food (and the cooking liquid, which would only contact your food if the bag breaks) is non-reactive at the temperatures you use them. I would recommend Thomas Keller's books on this cooking technique for more information.

All I can think of is the Arrested Development episode where George Bluth Sr. has a hot tub installed in his attic hiding place so that he can boil food in the bag.

I've not boiledfood in a bag, but not due to any aversion.
