Monster Garage

Postby arden » Tue Mar 25, 8:53 2003

As I've said before, I love the Discovery Channel. This is possibly one of my most favorite shows. It is reality, and I hate reality TV. Monster Garage is different.

The one mainstay on the show is Jesse James. He also owns West Coast Choppers, and that's how he got this show. They profiled him for Motorcycle Week, or something, loved him, and boom. He's got his own show. And yes, he is related to THE Jesse James.

Anyway, each week, Jesse is given a new challenge. To take a regular car and turn it into a monster of some sort. I think my favorite to date has been the Satambulance. He and the crew of the week had to take an ambulance and make it pop a wheelie. They have 7 days to do this (1 day to design with experts, 6 days to build) and a budget of $3000. In those 7 days, they succeeded in the task of making the ambulance pop a wheelie.

Only two challenges have failed. Last nights, which was to take a Mazda RX7 and make it into a dune buggy (called the Doom Buggy), and the hearse. I missed that episode. If the challenge fails, his team does not get their reward - a complete MAC tool set and box (I think it's a $1500 value), and Jesse destroys the car. The Doom Buggy was riddled with bullets from a machine gun (like a Howitzer) that was mounted to a Suburban. Jesse will also keep a piece of the failed car to remind himself that "failure sucks."

I love this show. I think that it's cool when the team disagrees, but it seems to go better when it's all smooth. And the skill that these men and women have is incredible. It makes me want to go out and learn more about anything mechanical. I recommend it for gear heads, and non-gear heads. It gets :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:
It's getting flames because Jesse likes to set stuff on fire. :D

I have watched this show before, it is awesome. I saw one where they turned, I forget what car exactly but I'm pretty sure it was a PT cruiser, into a snowmobile, it was great, to watch them go to work on it and turn it into that. It went about 70 mph on the snow, too, so it was no joke.
And that guy Jesse James does look like a badass, and he knows his shit completely. Soon as you see him start on the show you can just tell he's got everything down.

Monday nights, 8 pm. They repeat it on Saturday. I forget the time. It's listed on the Discovery website though.

Yeah, Jesse does look badass. And he's done little spots for the Discovery Channel letting kids know they don't have to go into computers, business, etc if that's not what they want to do. You can also work with your hands. Heck, it makes me want to go and learn auto mechanics and welding and stuff.

I love Monster Garage! Unfortunately I don't get discovery channel, so I can't watch it that often, which is sad because there was something really thrilling about turning an innocent little car into a snowplow or mower or whatever. sighs.

The hearse failed cuz the wiggy pully thingy (not good w/ cars) kept lighting on fire from having to pull the weight of two backhoe things. Jesse put it (the hearse) in a compactor, but it was too tough and the compactor exploded! I think they rigged that part. It was cool, though. I like the Mustang GT golf ball collector.

I don't remember what kind of car it was, A pick-up of some kind, but it was a nut shaker. I liked that one.

The golf ball collector was a Porche. Yeah, that one was pretty cool because it could shoot the golf balls back at the stuid golfers.

Spacefem, it's a crime that you don't get the Discovery Channel. We'll have to fix that. ;)

I'm going to have to look for that one, it sounds like it might be interesting. I used to do my own work on my bikes, (cuz I couldn't afford a REAL mechanic, lol), but I know very little abt cars, especially these days.

The Mustang GT became a huge lawn mower. Like the kind they use on a golf course. I can see where the confusion came in. :)
