favorite movie about the future

Postby spacefem » Sat Dec 4, 22:09 2010

Any time I come across a good list on wikipedia, I try to make it into a poll here. They're just so darn fun! So this poll is from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fi ... the_future

I decided not to include the star trek movies, because they're, like, their own thing. I just picked out my favorites.

Notes:
1) I have not seen Avatar.
2) I just saw City of Ember last year... I'd never heard of it, maybe nobody's heard of it, but I thought it was so cool!
3) A.I. Artificial Intelligence is absolutely horrible. I would have walked out of the theater, but I was with friends and didn't have a ride home. Seriously was that movie like six hours long or what?

I haven't seen most of these, but of the ones I've seen, The Matrix is definitely my favorite. It's probably in my top 20 overall, so makes sense. I'll give honorable mention to Minority Report, because that was really highly entertaining and is often overlooked.

I'm pretty stoked for 2081, though. Kurt Vonnegut for the win!

um, STAR TREK. all of star trek, in its entirety. I refuse to vote for anything else. :-<

I really like The Fifth Element (Die hard in the future), but I liked the book I,Robot (Asimov rocks!) better than any of the movies listed.

I also liked Gattaca and Blade Runner and one you left off the list, Bicentennial Man (another Asimov book I loved).

Then again I love most sci-fi movies and I even found a few redeeming moments in A.I. though on the whole it was a sleeper.

And I have to give honorable mention to Idiocracy just for weird dialogue scenes were the main character can't communicate because everyone he interacts with is too stupid to understand him.

I wrote a seriously scathing review of AI a few years ago on here. I voted for Serenity, but that's because I'm a browncoat and couldn't really vote for anything else. There are a lot of movies on there that I like, like The Fifth Element, and the Matrix, and Wall-E.

I haven't seen Avatar, but I've seen Pocahontas which is more or less the same, right? And I have seen Blade Runner but only up to the rape scene which is where I turned it off. There are a bunch of these films where I've read the book and the film entirely misses the point, like Soylent Green, I am Legend, I, Robot.

I also have to add that it's such a shame that they never made any sequels to the Matrix. It's such an interesting universe, good sequels could have expanded it so much further.

ooh so much to reply to!

1) spoon - I'm with you on star trek, but then it'd beg the question "what's the best star trek movie?" and that's another poll for another time. Actually, I'm almost tempted to make everyone on Spacefem watch one star trek movie a month next year so we can discuss them all on their own uniquely but often bad merits.

2) lilli - they made shitty matrix sequels, does that count? in fact the sequels they made will forever prevent me from wishing for more sequels. The Animatrix was impressive though.

3) monk - I cannot believe I forgot Idiocracy, it's one of my favorites!

There was a rape scene in Blade Runner?

Indeed it is too bad they never made any sequels to The Matrix :( :P

I couldn't think which to vote for.. then I remembered Jenny Agutter's costume in Logan's Run ;)

I like several of them. Serenity due to my obsession with Firefly. The Matrix, Blade Runner, 2001, Alien, Dune, Logan's Run, WALL-E, and Planet of the Apes. So for now I picked Logan's Run, because it's the one I most want to see right now.

The Fifth Element is pretty much my favourite any kind of movie ever, but Wall-E was awesome too.

Idiocracy is probably my favorite future movie, but Serenity is pretty damn close behind so I voted for it. I love Blade Runner but I like it more for the film itself than for the future aspects of it, same with the Matrix.

Where's Back to the Future part 2 and Johnny Mnemonic?

[edit] While I liked Planet of the Apes, I don't think it was good enough to get two options.

Okay, I have to give Event Horizon a nod ONLY because I had SO MUCH FUN mocking Sam Neill during the whole movie.
