Recommend me Women Singers

Recommend is a weird word. I've been looking at it for several seconds now and it just looks wrong to me.

I noticed that I have very few women singers in my album collection. I want more. If anyone knows of any really creative/sincere voices, tell me about them. I'm looking towards Julie Doiron a bit.

I really like Anais Mitchell - her folk/rock opera Hadestown is brilliant, but I also really enjoy several of her stand-alone songs. I listen to Tori Amos and Regina Spektor a lot, and of course Ani DiFranco, who I think is a wonderful poet as well as a great musician.

A second a recommendation for these even though I haven't listened to either in a long time. It's somehow hard to come up with memorable women singers. It's disgusting how mainstream it is but Adele is probably the first impressionable women singer I can think of.

I got on a Regina Spektor kick last night after an acquaintance posted a harp rendition that she had done of one of her songs. Very good.

Have you looked into Alison Krauss? I've been on a mini-bluegrass trip lately, and I really, *really* like her. (I first heard her on a CD with Doc Watson and a few others.)

Apart from the older classic stuff like Grace Slick as part of Jefferson Airplane, Stevie Nicks, and Joni Mitchell...

I totally second Alison Krauss. The stuff she did with Robert Plant is brilliant.

I'm not super familiar with Gillian Welch, but I like a few songs I've heard. She's also Americana/bluegrass. I recommend "That's the Way that it Goes".

I know Amanda Palmer has said and done some unfortunate things but I loove the Dresden Dolls.

This made me realize that I have no female singers in my music... Alice Cooper is about the closest I come. Probably should remedy that instead of just listening to them on Youtube and Grooveshark all the time.

Not exactly like Julie Doiron but if you don't know the band Warpaint, you might want to check them out. They have this soft psychedelic alt rock thing going - they have a few Doironesque songs as well. I LOVE them, they are an all woman band. I've seen them live twice(discovered them when I went to see the XX and they opened ): They rock the freaking house.

Anais Mitchell has a nice set of lungs.

I've heard most of the others, but some time while Sara's at school I'll have to listen to some songs more intently.

Camera Obscura is pretty good. And Warpaint? YES! I'm definitely liking what I hear.

Patti Smith and Sinead O'Conner are good if I'm in a certain mood.

Seconding: Ani diFranco for sure. Neko Case. Regina Spektor. ADELE--I didn't give her a chance for ages because she's top 40, but I was so wrong, she's fantastic. (I don't like Someone Like You and I'm sick of Rolling in the Deep but I really like One and Only and Set Fire to the Rain, plus the first album is just a cool neo-soul album).

I fucking adore Joanna Newsom, but this is very difficult to get a ton of agreement on.
