What have I uncovered?

Postby lykin005 » Thu Jun 7, 10:01 2012

OK so I recently found out for sure what I had suspected for a while. My dad can't stand "Women's rights." He literally a few minutes ago now started ranting about some women I didn't recognize on the view today. I asked him what she did and he said she was a women's rights activist. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and asked him what kind of things she said. He then mentioned something called (I'm likely not spelling this right or something because I searched it on google in several variations and found nothing.) glorious dynum. That's probably spelled wrong or maybe not even quite the right words. Anyway I was like "Waaaaahhhh?" I asked what the hell that was and dad started to say something then mom said something and dad walked off in a huff, mom rolled her eyes. What the hell is glorious dynum? And why is my dad so pissed about? Also how can I approach my dad and likely my brother about this kinda stuff to change their minds? I think they would be open if I could show them in a way that was non-accusatory. I think I should start with showing how the kyriarchy hurts men and then when they see that move on to how it affects others.

It seems very likely that he was talking about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_Steinem so I would start by reading that!

Oohh she spoke at an event I was at. She was incredibly smart and really awesome. I do have one book by her, I should read it again. When I first tried it was hard to get into.

Conservative culture hates feminism. Anytime I've spoken about a women's rights issue in any forum that is dominated by conservative men, I immediately become a pariah. Especially in the U.S., women's rights have become synonymous with "those liberal socialists" and partisan politics automatically align conservatives against it.

It's a shame that people's ability to critically evaluate ideas is now determined by where their political loyalties reside, and not based on the merits of individual arguments.

She has aid some pretty controversial stuff from time to time. But she did apologize for it.

Wow! I really thought I had uncovered the real life version of the majestic 12 or something. I heard them say that and I was like Glorious Dynum? What, is that latin?! Lol, indeed it was Gloria Steinem. I recognize the woman on the view as Jane Fonda who cofounded the Women's Media Center along with Gloria Steinem and Robin Morgan.

:dieslaughing: And I mean, LMAO.
What was once before you - an exciting, mysterious future - is now behind you. Lived; understood; disappointing. You realize you are not special. You have struggled into existence, and are now slipping silently out of it. This is everyone's experience. Every single one. The specifics hardly matter. Everyone's everyone.

This is a good set of questions though. Maybe if you could figure out what he's so pissed about, it would be easier to approach them about things?

Well when he was a kid he was sent to some sort of camp for kids run by one of the more popular conspiracy theorists. I can't remember his name but he's like reeeeaaallly nuts. Anyway his step-dad is also really into conspiracy's and stuff so he grew up with this stuff hardcore thrown down his throat. I suspect if I could show him something that made it's point really quickly and didn't blame men he would be open to it. I mean his whole life he's said that a rapist should be punished by having an ape rape them. I talked to him about the different ways of looking at justice and he was really open to it. I think he was just told a bunch of lies and bullshit about feminism and it's goals his whole life and so he won't even take a real look at it.

All I can say is that when you get ready to present your argument to your dad don't start it with " I was talking with some people on the internet...".
