A bit of news. The Susan G Komen foundation has decided to withdraw their support for planned parenthood. They say it's not political but no one believes them.

Meanwhile, some cool people are doing stuff about it.

John Scalzi (Sci-Fi author) has a relatively popular blog that I've been reading for years and due to his being perturbed at the Susan G. Komen foundation he is donating a weeks worth (starting today) of his ebook revenues to planned parenthood and his publisher is matching it. So if you're book shopping for some science fiction you might want to check him out. I think it's nice when you buy a book AND donate at the same time.

So some news, a plug for an author I like, and now a question.

The SGK foundation has done a lot to promote cancer awareness with women which is a good thing, but when they decided to withdraw their support from breast exams & cancer screening for the women who need it most are they now evil? I have really mixed feelings about this. I really want to dislike them now, but I don't know.

I'm glad people are taking their money and putting it to Planned Parenthood. One of my goals this year already was to donate to PP. Personally I've already had issues with SGK because the percentage they apply to actual research is pretty low. I try to donate to places with higher efficiency ratings.

I've never donated to SGK because they spend a ridiculous amount of money suing other charities and have outrageous overheads. I don't like charities that run themselves like corporations. So their recent decision is not really all that surprising to me and just further assures me of their goals and attitudes.

Also, while breast cancer research and awareness is very important, I've been donating/doing awareness for heart disease, which currently kills more women than breast cancer (indeed, all cancers combined.) Here's research from 2007 that supports this: http://www.cdc.gov/women/lcod/ (I have handouts with more updated charts that show pretty much the same thing.)

I have a lot of controversial feelings on breast cancer research funding, how much of it actually gets to where it is supposed to go, and if we're targeting the problem correctly to begin with.

Additionally, I hate the color pink.

I'm naturally suspicious of charities that seem too big. Much like how I hate NPOs that run like corporations--it makes for shitty social services.

Their claim of "efficiency" as a motive makes me laugh. Besides the relatively low percentage of funding for research in their budget, you'd think an organization would be more efficient by not suing people who use the phrase "for the cure," by reducing the amount it pays its top workers by a few hundred thousand, and by maintaining support for a group that works for the health of all women, especially those impoverished.

But this whole thing has brought into my mind just how awesome PP is, I mean I knew before, I've even donated and been to their rallies. But this week I finally got off my booty and signed up for their monthly donor program.
