Feminism

Feminism, or feminiminiminism, is about believing in the following:

• Both men and women should be treated fairly, regardless of gender
• More often than not, when someone is being treated unfairly due to gender, that person happens to be a woman.
• Based on the first two facts, we should focus on improving conditions for women in order to make a better, more fair world.

What's feminism all about?

Many non-feminists try to tell us what feminism is all about without ever actually talking to a feminist, which is puzzling. Technically feminism is about a lot of things, but for us, it's about:

• Ending rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence, everywhere in the world.
• Calling bullshit bullshit.
• Asking questions. Does the world have to be the way it's always been, or would thinks be better if we re-examined a few society norms?
• Encouraging women to have their voices heard in politics, science, economics, literature, and other forces that move this world forward. We have unique experiences and make up half the population, so we believe that all of these areas would benefit from our diverse perspective.

Myths about feminists

Here are our favorites, that come up all the time but are less true than you'd think:

• We like to burn our bras
• We don't shave our legs. Many of us shave our legs, often. Others don't. And there are millions of women who don't shave their legs, but it's got nothing to do with feminism.
• We hate men. Many of us admit that once we became feminists, we loved men even more, especially men who weren't afraid to talk about gender roles.
• We're angry all the time.
• We're lesbians.
• You have to be a woman to be a feminist
• Feminists don't wear makeup
• Feminists have no sense of humor
• Feminists don't want to be wives or mothers

Notice that this section doesn't say, "We're not hairy-legged man-hating feminists like some are!" because honestly, we have yet to meet those feminists. And we've met lots of feminists... we would have found them by now. It does seem likely to us that the anti-feminists would make up that stereotype to divide women, because we've seen that happen a lot too. We're not unusually cool feminists... all feminists are just cool.
