Re: mental health and clarity, maybe

That sounds really tough. (Sorry if that's an inadequate response - I'm not sure what to say.) I hope that you do get the consistency / time / space to get some things sorted.

Re: Your favorite app?

Podcast Republic (free), for downloading and listening to podcasts. Runtastic (was about £5?) for tracking fitness stuff - it has a bunch of features that are cool. I like that it lets you choose from lots of different types of sports (despite the name), and it lets you add manual entries easily, so...

Re: Powerpoint Pet Peeves?

Transition effects and sounds. Just don't. Absolutely. Watching each bullet point of text fly in from the side might seem like a good idea, but please, please don't. Just have the whole slide contents show up at once unless there's a very good reason not to. Think hard about readability when the im...

Lemon meringue ice cream (not sorbet) which I had once on holiday. Otherwise, good coffee ice cream is hard to beat. I also like cookies and cream.

Re: Use ALL the data

One strategy I have used is to go into the data settings and set the 'warning' and 'limit' on the data on the phone itself way lower than my monthly amount. Like, at the beginning of the month, set it to be 1/4 of my monthly amount. Then at least I can only accidentally blow a week's worth at a time...

Re: how do you like your couch?

We currently don't have a couch - there's a single bed that's pretending to be a couch. We're hoping to replace it with a couch-that-turns-into-a-double-sofa-bed this year sometime (we have a specific IKEA one in mind, just need to save up for it).

Re: what's your favorite math?

Graph theory (in this context a graph is a bunch of connected nodes) is really neat - has really pretty proofs and clever bits. I don't like doing stats, but I like the insights it can give you (e.g. "is that actually surprising that X happened, or would you expect it to happen sooner or later?") an...

I'm crocheting a cardigan!

I've been knitting stuff for ages, but despite lots of attempts I've never quite "got" crochet. Until now! I've started trying to crochet again in the last couple of weeks (with the help of a book with Extremely Clear Pictures) and now I'm working on a cardigan. My Mum had a load of spare yarn that ...

Re: how drunk are you getting?

Between about 7pm and 3am I had a small amount of hot toddy, mulled wine x2, some sparkling wine at midnight, and a very weak gin and tonic (plus two cups of tea and some other non alcoholic things). This is probably the most I've ever had in one evening - but then it was also rather a long evening,...

Re: Christmas Haul

MrM bought me "Sherlock Holmes: consulting detective" which is AMAZING! (I'm a big Holmes/Poirot-style mystery fan). It's a game where you get a mystery and then have to try and solve it 'better' than Sherlock Holmes (there's a scoring algorithm where you lose points if you talked to more people tha...

Re: Happy New Year!

I too spent the evening playing board games! A friend had a get-together of about 10 of us playing board games, eating delicious food, drinking, playing more board games, eating delicious dessert, and generally catching up. It was glorious. Games that were played: Bang the Dice game, Dominion, Dixit...

Re: do you pick out the cashews?

Wait, pick out (exclude) in order to leave them to one side and not eat them? Or pick out (select) in order to eat them first? (I was reading a textbook about programming today talking about this very issue - saying if you named your method "filter" it wasn't immediately obvious whether you wanted i...

Re: RTFM

Depends a lot on the thing, partly how complicated it is to figure out and partly how expensive it was (which roughly correlates to how hard it would be to replace / how long I expect to have it around for). So we don't keep instructions for, say, assembling IKEA bookcases, but I'm definitely keepin...

Re: How did you pay for college?

Like Charli, government-backed loans. Repayments for these are linked to earnings (you pay X% of the amount you make over £Y) so are low-risk in that if my income drops too low my loan repayments will stop until the income goes back up again. I was also able to live with family for free during the h...

I cannot stand it. I want to live in a world where people are PEOPLE no matter their ability, genital arrangement, clothing style, color, religion, WHATEVER. And so I just cut off and isolate myself away from a whole world of people out there who I know are living their lives as best they can but j...

Re: favorite way to tell time

I love my watch (or the bottom corner of my computer screen, if I'm on a computer). Lately when talking to people there have been a few occasions where I could check the time by looking at the other person's watch in (as far as I know!) a fairly subtle way - e.g. their hand was near their face, with...

Yes, I have annual leave and do use it, generally to relax / spend time with family / go away on holiday / etc. I think in the UK people are pretty good at actually taking their holidays - I've heard there's a big culture difference compared to the US? There's a legal requirement here for employers ...

In the last month or so we've started getting a veg box, which we're going to have regularly once a fortnight. This is definitely making me eat more/a wider variety of veg than I was before, because once something's in the house I'll want to make sure to use it up properly, and there are some things...
