Re: What's your favorite poem?

At one point I convinced myself I disliked Edgar Allen Poe. It was for some superficial reason - disliking the emo fanculture around him. He's great. It's hard for me to pick one because there are so many kinds of poems. So I'll stick to three, one long narrative poem, one lyrical poem, and one medi...

Re: Knee Surgery

That suuuuuucks. :/ Crutches are insanely uncomfortable and hard to get around on. Like, WTF. When I was a kid, I thought they'd be totally fun! THEY NOT, CHILD BORK, NOT AT ALL. YOU WERE SO WRONG. Yeah, crutches are (kind of?) fun when I'm 60 lbs and get to swing around and do cool balancing tricks...

LinkedIn Revisited

So it's been at least a year since rowan made a topic about LinkedIn. That's here: https://spacefem.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=50013&p=704255 Now I'm branching out into making a profile myself. I added skills (whaaaat?), wrote a pithy summary, added some of my acquaintances as network people (wh...

Re: Leelah Alcorn's situation wouldn't have gotten better. (Trigger Warning)

It's worth noting that "it gets better" earned these kinds of critiques at the time it went viral in 2010. It was fine - if you were white, male, and well-resourced like Dan Savage: Many, however, have been struck with how these deaths have been made to serve the purpose of highlighting an exception...

Re: do you know how an engine works?

So an engine converts some form of energy into mechanical force, right? A steam engine uses steam pressure to move a thing, a combustion engine uses gasoline that is injected and combusted in a cylinder in order to move a piston, and so on? On a good day I can explain how a car engine works, and som...

Re: What's your favorite planet?

Aurora, or the various focal planets depicted orbiting the star Tau Ceti in sci-fi. It's one of those stars that is close enough to imagine reaching and colonizing, and so commonly ends up being a first-step system to galactic civilization, as Isaac Asimov showed in The Caves of Steel . Le Guin set ...

Have you ever pretended you don't know something?

Akin to this article, about pretending not to know a philosopher to avoid a tedious conversation about him: https://www.thehairpin.com/2016/07/the-best-time-i-pretended-i-hadnt-heard-of-slavoj-zizek/#.b99as6hxj I pretended not to know Jacques Lacan one time so that I wouldn't have to get into a conv...

Re: silly destressers

I make tea. Heating up the water, washing the mug, setting them out to dry as the water finishes heating, finding the right flavor, steeping, blowing on the water surface to feel the steam rise, taking that first tentative kiss-sip - it's a centering ritual I can do even if things are very busy for ...

Re: When does one become "a local"?

I view being a local as all about social credibility. It's not about being in a place for an absolute period of time, being born there, or knowing the difference between Space Kroger, Sketch Kroger, and Murder Kroger. All of those are qualifications people use to pass as local. So I'd say if you can...

Re: What games have you played lately?

Besides periodic Sea of Thieves, I've returned to Crusader Kings 2. The gist is that I play a medieval noble who has to perpetuate their dynasty through heirs and secure their territory. Meanwhile, Sims-like, lots of events happen that create a fun narrative experience. For example, I became a queen...

Re: Are you right handed or left handed?

I'm right handed. That said, I find it silly that people test for handedness in films by throwing objects at them. If someone did that to me I'd catch with my left hand, because I did that in baseball and other sports.

Yes and I've always been terrible. It's one of those things I don't mind being bad at and still doing. I haven't bowled since my (grandmother's) bowling ball somehow got given to my brother's wife. But I certainly wouldn't have brought it overseas with me anyway. Are there bowling alleys (or someth...

STEM work and social effects

This is a typical tutoring session or poster presentation I engage in with someone: "Tell me a bit about your research." They're doing something that sounds interesting in itself. That said, if successful, that thing may mean changing work structures, cutting jobs, harming pedestrians, reducing the ...

Re: posting pictures of kids and privacy

On the one hand, sharing information online is different because online materials always have a potentially public audience, one that goes well beyond circles of friends. How many parents have shared something only to have it become a meme that explodes wildly out of context? On the other hand, in m...

Re: are you afraid of spiders?

I feel I am appropriately cautious with spiders. I've seen both brown recluses and black widows. Even less-venomous spiders have irritating bites. I don't trifle with them if I can help it. I have no compunction against killing them, but I prefer to set them outside or out of the way if possible. Th...

It always helps me to make lists of what I'm going to get out of a job. Enjoyment, money, benefits, education, whether the place smelled good - all of that.
