Re: College admissions scandal

So all of that is fun to ogle. But I agree that the more important point is the way it highlights all the existing inequalities in the system. I've been thinking a lot about why we draw the lines we do. We all know that rich kids often get more resources that help them in the admissions process, fr...

College admissions scandal

So this week 50 people were indicted for using payments and fraud to illegally influence college admissions decisions at prestigious colleges and universities. Some parents paid someone to help their child obtain special accommodations for the SAT/ACT or have an adult take the test for them. Others ...

Re: Meghan Murpy on Gender Identity and Women's Rights

Personally I find worrying about the tactics of introducing issues credible when it comes from people active in advocating for those civil rights, and not when they come from people skeptical about whether the said group of people should have rights.

Re: Milo Manara's controversial new Spider Woman drawing.

Yeah, it's not the art in itself that troubles me, but the context of a panel on mainstream comics. (Well, okay, I find the image itself bad too, but there's a lot of bad objectifying "art" out there.) I'm not surprised: Milo Manara *has* published artwork almost as explicit. Here's an effective jux...

Re: Meghan Murpy on Gender Identity and Women's Rights

I disagree with the conspiracy theory being posed between academia, far-leftists, and anti-science people using trans people as their platform. To take up one point: Nope, the arguments of the radical left are not based in science. They are based in ideology. People doing gender studies in college a...

Re: learning to read

From what I understand, many kids start reading before school. Reading to kids helps with that, especially when indicating with a finger what text I'm reading at a given time. (I've just begun to see this with my nephew, who I sit and read with when I visit.) That said, it's not unusual to take a li...

Re: Meghan Murpy on Gender Identity and Women's Rights

Happy 3000th! The transcript is hard to get through, largely because of the many false generalizations going on about trans people, trans activism, and feminisms that don't agree with her own, as well as her continual misgendering of trans women. One sample early in the transcript: This, coming from...

Re: Which is the best cycle?

So wait, isn't a quadcycle a four-wheeled vehicle driven by human power?

Wouldn't that be two bicycles tied together? Whereas a septcycle would be two bicycles tied to a tricycle center?

Re: terrible but fun

I don't have a good answer. I've thought about this for 20 minutes. The closest I've come is SimCity. Any of them. I am able to build a competent town, but I always manage to mess it up. I end up with abandoned houses, a budget that's out of wack, traffic issues, trash piling up everywhere, low valu...

Re: How do you say gif?

I used to say "jif" but then I spent enough time around nerds who were obnoxious about it that I use the hard g about half the time now. A related question would be whether either side has more obnoxious people. Like, as a [jif] person, I like to banter about it, and I find the "jraffic" argument k...

Re: Sleep for babies after 6 months

Thank you for the stories. I try not to get caught up in comparisons, but it's so hard when someone else is like, "Oh yeah, they're sleeping through the night after six months, no problem!" and we're nudging each other when it's our turn to get up at night almost every night. Did I do something wron...

How do you say gif?

I've long been curious about the answer to this. Personally, I say [jif], but I'm happy to entertain reasons why I am right or why I have made a critical error in my life path.

Sleep for babies after 6 months

What worked for you? The baby we have, at over 6 months, is pretty chill in most respects. He is happy during the day, he doesn't seem apprehensive at new situations, and while he has started to exhibit some separation anxiety, it's not bad: he's happy to be handed off to other family members or fri...

God, I feel like that theme is begging to lead to national stereotypes. Off the top of my head, you could go espresso, opera, fine art, gelato, Spaghetti westerns, the Borgias (or similar items), Roman items, sauces, sausage, Papal items, pine nuts, canal boats, olive oil, and a fair number of Shake...

We may sign up for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which mails a book a month to kids until they reach kindergarten. I know we've also floated the idea of getting a magazine subscription, but we really don't know what to get.

mels, those are some good sources. The 2017 article made me think of two points. First, if we're studying using FBI crime data, then we're studying "unfounded accusations," which could be either "false" or "baseless." Any estimate of confirmed false allegations based on federal data will therefore (...

You're committing a kind of argument from ignorance. You're saying that the relatively reliable stats Enigma linked to can't be trusted (without evidence or statistical knowledge of your own), but then you're injecting your assumptions (which are even less credible) of what you think the rate of fal...
