Re: Happy birthday octarineoboe!

Thanks! I am a firm believer in extended celebrations so I am happy to get belated wishes, lol. I have made some bad alcohol choices this week already though so i'd better save the Estonian beer for another time.

My college besties (a married couple) and I fantasize about sharing a house, and they are actively trying to have kids, so we talked abou...

Re: Do you buy bottled water?

i try not to buy bottled water regularly, but I do for baseball games because the stadium lets you bring in a sealed bottle and I'd rather buy it for $1 on the street outside than $4 inside (or get up to go to the water fountain a lot and miss the game. Especially when i'm sitting way at the top - g...

@Sonic. They really should change the name. Re: Have you been in a car accident?

someone scraped my car in the parking lot today while I wasn't in it, does that count?
it's a small amount of damage and his insurance is going to cover it but it was not a nice end to my workday.

Re: How do you seduce people?

I seem to have the most success with dance and/or by diving into a topic I'm passionate about - even if it's negative - right away? Idk I haven't "seduced" this guy yet in the physical sense but I talked a lot about archive box numbers on our first date and he wants to go on a THIRD date with me so ...

Re: When does one become "a local"?

I like Sonic's point about relative locality. I definitely feel more like a local in my current city than I do now in my hometown. Yesterday I went to an event and ran into several people I knew, and that made me feel very at home. Same when I went to a neighborhood bar before it closed and a barten...

i LOVE that article and keep hoping I'll have a chance to try it in the wild...but I also brought up Foucault on a first date yesterday so, um, I think I might be the problem. I've definitely used the same strategy as Enigma, softening something or presenting it as sort of an unconsidered opin...

Ugh spoon I am so with you. This is my last semester of my master’s degree and i have often felt like I’ve spent two years begging for feedback and structure from my advisor and getting none (I also had a huge breakup in the middle and am convinced I might have been done a YEAR AGO otherwise, but it...

Re: What is your favorite sentence that exemplifies a weird language feature?

the buffalo sentence drives me nuts because i don't register buffalo as being a verb. I know it CAN be, officially, but I've only ever seen it in this example sentence so it just does not compute. I think "up with which we will not put" is my favorite because it's so stuffy. And I like "we saw her d...

Just want to add to the "you're not too old for grad school" anecdata - people in my program are all sorts of ages, and really very few started right out of college (in fact, when I worked in the department right out of college, literally all of the grad students were older than me. One person had g...

Re: Feminist Therapy

I haven't explicitly asked, but I can't imagine myself getting along with a therapist who wasn't a feminist. My ex and I went to therapy before we broke up, and the first person we tried was a terrible fit for us, partly because he seemed to have really strict ideas about gender roles (and I don't k...
