Make "social impact" a standard part of cost/benefit analysis in STEM curricula.
100% in favor of this

more later when I am able to someday drive home from being trapped in another state
A fix like this is relatively easy. The culture shift, maybe not so much.

Re: Do you like bowling?

I am So. Bad. At. Bowling. I rarely break 120. I can't spin the ball to save my life and can't bowl in anything but straight lines. I hate breaking my nails while the bowling is happening. I usually sprain/strain something in my body while bowling. I bowl in constant fear of falling. So no, I don't ...

Re: light hearted bitch-post.

I'm just sad and anxious all the time :( How 'ya feelin'? Hope it's a sunny day for you! Me, I'm annoyed because I needed to hem some jeans yesterday, and I got out my sewing machine only to find out that the thing was all but seized. Blerh. I do like the old-fashioned shop where I get its tune-ups...

Re: Unplanned, polyamorous pregnancy situation

'Im sorry you're feeling overwhelmed -- I can understand why. I'm not in a polyamorous relationship and I have a fairly traditional family type, so no experience to share there. But in your shoes, if I could afford it , I would get a paternity test done ASAP, which seems to be around 8 weeks. maybe ...

Re: STEM work and social effects

I've tackled the question in a different context. One of my humanities/social sciences electives in college was a course titled "Philosophy of Technology." In fact, my course very closely followed this syllabus . In any case, a large chunk of the class was spent trying to answer the questions "What ...

Since he chose the Dyson perhaps you should 'let' him do all the vacuuming? :)
I've been trying my best.
But I like to use it too.

Re: are you afraid of spiders?

Not in theory. But Arachnophobia is the heebie-jeebiest movie everrrrrrr. And few things creep me out as much as walking into spiderwebs. My brain registers that as me inviting all the spiders in close proximity to attack me for destroying their handiwork.

Re: What do you look for in a vacuum cleaner?

Well, when we bought a house like 10 yrs ago my husband insisted on a Dyson but all we could afford was their low end model. It os hella loud. It is bulky and heavy. We can afford a nicer lighter one now, so I've been looking for *any* decline in performance to claim "this thing doesn't work anymore...

Motherhood and Career Derailment

I won't bore you with the details, but after I had kids I made the conscious decision to let my career take a backseat in my life. It was tough because I am a big nerd, but I am at peace with my choice. I admire the women who have the drive and resources to "have it all" and pull it off magnificentl...

Re: posting pictures of kids and privacy

I've never asked for permission to post (they are preschoolers), but lately I often let them know I am taking their picture and the few times they've asked me not to take their picture, I have obliged. Once they let me take their picture, I don't usually ask if I can send this to grandma. To me this...

Re: I don't believe in dinosaurs.

A world where one cannot believe the physical evidence for hundreds of prehistoric animal species sounds like a VERY confusing world to live in. I agree. Is it all just a massive conspiracy theory?? I think that's why I assumed what they meant was that they didn't believe in evolution, but instead ...

Not strictly on-topic but: Does anyone have a recommendation for a good set of rules for a live game of Werewolf/Mafia? I've only played with an online community and that was like 10 yrs ago, so I barely remember the gist of the game, but I have a group of about 8-10 friends who showed interested in...

Re: Brand new human organ identified - REALLY!!!

I caught the tail end of this story on the radio this morning -- very cool. Must be so exciting for cancer research and medical diagnosis! I looked it up some, and it seems like pCLE has been around for ~10 yrs, though I'm sure in that time it has gotten a lot more refined and sophisticated. The art...

This reminds me of my favorite true assertion: I've seen the Pope naked.

Also, it took me a while, but I can now pronounce that 8 buffalo sentence with the proper inflection.

Re: light hearted bitch-post.

I'm annoyed that I was asked to remove all my books from my bag going through security. I then was stopped and searched anyway because folders with paper apparently count as books.
