Re: New Apple iOS and warmer screen colors after dark

Why do I not have this on my iPad?

Oh well, I'll stick to trying to read books in night mode in the middle of the night. That seems to help. I don't know if it's actually the visual aspect or reducing the "keep clicking, something exciting might happen" phenomenon, though.

Re: it gets better thread for parents

I'll take more posts here! I'm almost ready to give birth to my second, and I swear some parts are less scary because I know what's coming, but most of it is more scary because I do. What I do wish I'd really understood the first time is how short all the horrible baby phases are, in the long run, a...

Re: Is masculinity still valued/necessary?

Right. What's the point of having gender roles, per se? Part of what makes traits become "toxic" is preemptively assigning them to a single group of people.

Re: A very common pro-choice argument

It's a very interesting opinion! I think that woman should have a choice, after all, but she needs to weigh all the pros and cons before making it. In this case it's wise to try role-playing games to imagine how it will be to have a baby and take care of it. Not to be flippant, but I think most of ...

Re: let's list our favorite children's books

We are on little kids' books here. My favourite book as a child was Professor Wormbog's Gloomy Kerploppus, which was about a clinically depressed kerploppus. It's not in print anymore. I also liked a couple of other awesome books that are not in print anymore because of really clever language play. ...

Re: Counseling and religious objections

Definitely someone would be best served by a counselor who is not bigoted toward them, but what happens when it's your EAP or the only provider in your health network or the only one in a reasonable distance? You could effectively be denying care at all.

Re: Community Spaces on the Internet

I was sick of that echo chamber. There was drama. Without any trolls to unite us and remind us there's a common enemy, we fought with each other over trivial little things. I have a love/hate relationship with forum openness. I got so fed up with Feminism 101 Lessons Needed posters and trolls, but ...

Re: CDC: all women 15-44 should avoid alcohol in case they're already pregnant

I think FAS being "rare" may be a matter of perception based on regional variation. I live among communities that have FAS rates as high as 80% -- that's not a typo. But! I think this very fact completely agrees with everyone's contention that focusing on the moms who might have a drink or the women...

Re: not excited about others' pregnancies

I have to admit I'm really only excited about other people's pregnancies when I am pregnant. That sounds super selfish. I actually find that if anyone wants my advice, it's actually all about the pregnant woman and taking care of yourself snd advocating for yourself and being okay with complaining a...

Coming in late to game here, but I'm not cool with the use of an ethnic slur here either. That's pretty creepy and horrible. I just was hoping someone else had a shudder at that part too.

Stop boiling us down to hilariously simplistic, then, boring troll. Sonic# is explaining to you the dominant narrative. Feminism tries to upset that dominant narrative. If you are going to argue that the dominant narrative is crap, we agree that it is crap. The fact is the people who are in control...

Ugh, I wish I knew. I had to move a bunch of times in the last few years, so I don't have any at all. Just moved again in August. Hopefully we will be able to stay here for a while, but it seems to take so long to meet people.

Re: Anti-harrassment, harassment, conference moderation, and hate-trolling.

I think it's perfectly reasonable not to accept all viewpoints as valid in order to foster that diversity. No one needs to be Fox News -- having a holocaust scholar and a holocaust denier doesn't make things fair and balanced, and doesn't expose anyone to an alternative viewpoint worth being exposed...

I got tired of people asking if it was planned. I feel like that's such a personal question, but I got it from all kinds of people.

This time I think it's probably my age. Maybe last time it was too.

Aside from that, I don't get much commentary. I'm kind of scary.

My 17 month old walked two days ago. Hasn't walked since then, but it's still a relief. Mine was a late walker and was running two months after his first step. Kids are weird. My three year old turned three on Sunday! That's not really doing something, though. He can't get over having a cake with c...

2002 Toyota Echo. Still get 42+ mpg on my commute, so no reason to change until it falls apart. I wouldn't mind a four door though, having kids now.

Other vehicle is a basic chev pickup. 2004. We like cars that don't cost much and just keep going.

Longest at a go? A few cross country drives of 16 hr days solo. But I was twenty years younger. It sounds like hell to me now.

Re: Why do we have periods?

Anyway, if the mothers of other species can tell that the baby is abnormal (or that they just don't feel like being pregnant right now) and get rid of it that easily, that's pretty interesting. It would really make the abortion discussion interesting (or moot?) if humans worked that way. I know tha...

I think it was explained really well already. The personal anecdote that stands out for me is that at one point my horrible health care plan de died to do some "incentive" thing where you could get money if you met a certain number of criteria. Unfortunately, I could never ever get it because two of...

Well, for one thing, find a workplace other an a grade five classroom. Women don't talk like that except in elementary school and MRA fanfic.
