I once read a definition of sex as "the pursuit of an orgasm". I like that definition.

Re: favorite charity?

Can I ask why you look for big ones? This year I donated to a political party and to a local mission that helps homeless people. I realize that donating to a political party is not what most people call charity, but I believe that while charity is important, it is equally important to work towards a...

Re: Guilt-mongering and hypocrisy galore

Sigh. well, on the suitcase thing I managed to appeal to my mother who understood my point and let me keep my suitcase. And Aunt Marie (my least favourite aunt) went home this afternoon, three hours earlier than she said she would! And THEN me and my other aunt, who I love and have much in common wi...

buying dresses online

Does anyone here buy dresses online? If you do, what websites would you recommend or not recommend? Canadian sites are preferred but not necessary. I've been told by a couple people that they've had good experiences, but I'm terrified of buying something without trying it on. Apparently there are si...

Guilt-mongering and hypocrisy galore

I just reached the point of my vacation back home where I am finally hating my family. Oh well, I lasted at least twice as long this time as I did last time. There's just so much hipocrisy coming fromm the moral authorities in this family. Manners are only necessary if you're under 40, apparently. U...

It's also important to remember that most sexual assaults are unreported, so crime stats may only give us a small portion of the picture.

You relate easily to people and can be very convincing. You know what people need to make their lives better. You can be warm and generous, and when things are going well for you you tell everyone and can't help but share the laughter. You might make a good Environmental Engineer Environmental engin...

Re: Men and Women Can't Be Friends?

If I was a bi woman, I would not hang out alone with other bi/lesbian women because I'm married to a man, I know one thing can easily lead to another, that's just the way it is. Again, groups of friends are okay, but having that "one special best friend I just need to spend a weekend with" is fishy...

i don't think there's any point in celebrating - the regime continues. The problem is the system, not the man himself.

Re: "Until reproductive rights are gone, I won't drink coffe

Yeah, Xin said it all, except I would argue that when it comes down to it, their arguments are essentially red herring for the fact that their goal is to control women's lives. The "life" narrative is a more attractive argument that is more difficult to beat down. What they really despise is independ...

This whole thing contributes to the discourse that being married is the ideal state of being for everyone, which is really oppressive.

More explanation of rape culture

We've had a few conversations here about what rape culture actually is , and I just stumbled upon a really great example, and I wanted to share it. This article from Jezebel talks about a study that had people look at a list of quotes, and try to discern which quotes were from "men's" magazines, and...

errr, Sonic, I'm a little uncomfortable with that use of the word intersectionality. Intersectionality is about how different forms of oppression work together, and what you're trying to express is about identities. I like what you're saying, but intersectionality isn't the right word.

Re: if it weren't for sexism....

There's a book by Malcolm Gladwell, Outliers , that explains how success is not just a product of hard work, but also opportunity. Successful people have the opportunity to learn how to be good in their fields. In one part of the book he comes up with the "10,000 hour rule", which is basically the o...

Sorry to zombify the thread, but I really want to add something. This is why I really, really like the word queer. Because it's so flexible about what that means in terms of who you're attracted to. Only within the last year have I decided realized that I am not straight. But I don't like the word b...

Adventures in depression

As a person with chronic depression, I greatly appreciated this cartoon, which satirically explains what depression is like. It's pretty accurate in my opinion: when I'm going trhough a rough stage, I can feel horrible and sad and down on myself for days at a time, but without being able to explain ...

@The Other Lizard : Which wars are you thinking of when you say "the misuse of "the liberation of women" as a justification for war?" Canada is heavily involved in the war in Afghanistan, and from the beginning one of the justifications for the war was that we could restore women's rights in that c...

Re: "I know 16 year old girls - I was one"

I wonder if age is the determining factor here. I think younger generations are more likely to have real friends who are of a different gender than previous generations. That's definitely been my experience in talking about this kind of thing with my parents. My mom took a long time to get used to t...

1. What do you think is the most important feminist issue in YOUR community(I'm hoping for meatspace but whatever)? It's hard to pick one. THey are all equally important, I think. We have native women who are abused and go missing here all the time, so I would pick systemic racism and violence agai...
