Re: job application sites

I hate ones that require you to upload your resume AND ALSO FILL OUT ALL OF THE INFORMATION ON THE SITE. Either have me upload it, and accept just that or pre-populate things, or have me type everything out. Don't make me duplicate things. WHYYYYYYYYYY I was doing okay today until I got to an appli...

Re: airlines and service animals

In the States at least, pets can be deemed emotional support animals with absolutely no training, and documentation can be attained through websites without even a doctor’s visit. My cousin had her dog ‘certified’ as an emotional support animal only so that she wouldn’t have to pay to have the dog ...

Re: How many books have you read this year?

Just two so far ... I read Zadie Smith’s NW and then the Secret History of Twin Peaks dossier/novel, which I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoyed the original series. Now I’m reading The Golden Bowl at a rate of three pages a night before bed, so I’ll probably be working on that for a while.

Re: Gender and references to partners

I use partner for my gentleman companion. Despite being in a long-term relationship, we're not married, and don't intend to be. Partner better confirms what he means to me than "boyfriend," which I don't like. I also like that partner is gender-neutral; it feels like I'm neither actively concealing ...

Re: what was the topic of your thesis?

For my bachelors, I studied how the architecture of Mycenaean palaces provided opportunity for social interaction. Specifically, the shape and size of spaces (rooms, corridors etc), sight lines and window/door placement, and how far bodily odor can travel. That's so cool! I just finished my master'...

Re: newbie wants your opinion on women's fashion

^ I agree on what a pain hand-washing and dry-cleaning is, but I'm more than willing to hand-wash my silk dresses. Silk is so versatile, and I've been able to get some great pieces at reasonble prices from everlane.com (which is all about ethical clothing production). I'm also boycotting rayon, visc...

Re: let's list our favorite children's books

My cousin's baby, Luna, loves Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Jamberry (which was one of my favorites when I was a one-year-old too). She also loves "pat the bunny" style board books with different textures to feel on each page. Does anyone remember Blueberries for Sal? "Kuplink, kuplan...

True. It's taking a legitimate poem andgiving it an abrupt ending for comedic effect. His version is jill coming down with the money because used her "feminine assets" to get his money.... I'm actually really impressed that this crowd doesn't immediately jump to patriarchal objectification slut sha...

Re: Local girl damages vision from costume contact lenses and my thoughts on sympathy

Empathy is the phenomenon of feeling with or for someone, feeling pain on behalf of another person. Of course empathy is selfish; we can only feel our own pain, even if it's imagined pain in witness of someone else's suffering (insert pedantic comment about sympathy vs. empathy). We could think abou...

Don't contact your girlfriend. Make plans and keep busy. Use online dating sites, but keep your eyes open to possible new relationships and friendships with the people you interact with daily. Start a hobby. Take some time to make sure you're happy and healthy. Treat yourself to little pleasures. Do...

Re: What foods do you try to buy organic?

I try to buy local produce, milk and eggs; I'm fortunate enough to live in an area that supports local farmers (who are more likely to use organic/ethical methods). So I buy "organic" stuff, but the "local" label is more important to me than the "organic" label.
