Re: Federal Case against CA Prop 8

But whats the difference between civil partnerships and marriage, apart from the religious connotations? If there is no difference, then what's the problem with just calling it marriage in both cases? The difference in name will tend to make the two appear to be different things. As you say, marria...

I usually look it up in the Oxford English Dictionary, since my school has a subscription to it. If I'm really lazy and at home, I check Wiktionary.

Re: War Movies

I might add that I think a major problem with feminism in general is that it tries to deny some fundamental truths about sexes like the above.
When a fundamental truth doesn't fit you, it's not a fundamental truth.

Welcome orchidcolors! Have you ever played a fiddle? I totally hate the kind of blue that's almost purple... it confuses my brain. IS IT BLUE OR PURPLE?? No one can ever tell... When in doubt, my brain calls blue. This has caused problems before - relationships have nearly been broken up because I i...

That's really cool, Pyro Chick. I love the family crest idea... and the helmet. And the goofy face. ;) I have two ideas. The first is a definite possibility. The second is more a dream, if I should have the time, money, and indulgence. First, the dream. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/232/496093165_6...

Re: being best friends

I went through this a couple of times. I was really confused for a while, because I'd come home and call up my friend and ask, "Hey, do you want to go bowling?" Always to voicemail. I got tired of trying. And then I pretty much didn't talk to him for a couple of years. Our interests had diverged, bu...

Re: Vivian Stromberg on Violence.

I would argue that the reason a lot of men like violence is because of their own interpretation of masculinity (not that it makes it right, but there is a connection). I've always liked regulated violence like Boxing, UFC, Wrestling, etc.. Doing it or watching it. I just feel it's fun, but it might...

Lillerina gets the award for making me think the most... and DWH the "brushes with fame" award and Best Jedi. And I nominate Meperidine for best avatar, because I can't figure out what it is, but it looks really cool.

Re: MLP: World's Most Offensive Joke

I have this theory that people find it okay to discriminate against queers because there is this feeling of 'they chose to be this way', which obviously doesn't apply to race. I'm not sure why it would be okay to tell sexist jokes but not racist, the only thing I can think is that a lot of sexist j...

Re: Smiles

I smile fairly often when I'm around others, and I catch myself doing it alone too. I don't show my teeth often either. Smiling is one of my two dominant expressions. THe other is the blank/neutral face I get when I'm thinking, that people often confuse for being stern or angry.

Re: Feminist Pornography? (possibly NSFW)

To me, it seems largely like a marketing decision. Calling the pornography "feminist" is a way to attract a subset of the viewing audience that wishes for such a thing to exist: a kind of porn that does not immediately degrade the female participant(s), that isn't always trapped in a male POV, that ...

I have to pick android. They're like Vulcans, but cooler. ;) I like the ability to think extremely quickly, the Wizard of Oz-like struggle to be human, inherent friendliness, incorrigible curiosity, surprising strength, ability to sort out temporal interference, and evil twin brother. My first DnD game was with second edition... and that was after 3.5 was out. I prefer it too. The best things I got for Christmas were books. I got the first twenty issues of Sandman in a lovely bound edition, a Patricia McKillip book, Empires of Magic by Geraldine Heng, a book of mathematical proof...

Re: He died on Christmas Eve

My condolences. :/ Dying that young, and that alone, scares me too. Strictly speaking, I know that it doesn't matter, since after death I'll either be alone eternally or not, and I might be too nonexistent to care. But... as someone living, I would hope that someone would be there for me in my last ...

I did all mine in one day. Most of it ended up being books, rather unintentionally. I just kept finding good book ideas for people, in between things I've read for school, picture books that I've looked through (pictures!), and random brainstorming.

If I didn't get books, I mostly got games.

Re: Feminist Movies, TV, Music and Books!

Bookwise, I've really enjoyed Charles Stross's stories. Any of them, really, though Glasshouse most explicitly deals with gender. It's far-future science fiction, but pretty soon you'll see what I'm talking about. In his other books, he's accustomed to writing strong female characters and smart but ...

Roommate code - when something bothers you, tell them to stop. When they don't stop, and it's a felony to turn them in, just take a walk for a while. Really. They don't need you giving them legal hassle. :(

My first consistently read comics were the Sonic the Hedgehog ones. I liked them when they were simple and charming. All the atheists I know believe in that. You are how others view you. I think you're right, that people should be less self-centered. But I don't think that people should lose their self-center too much. I'm starting to sound like a Nathaniel Branden Objectivist (that is, the less crazy version), so I'll explain. I'm going off of Mikhail ...
