Re: what would a widely used non-gendered pronoun do?

People who say ['they' is] grammatically incorrect are straight up wrong I seem to remember learning that 'they' has historically been used as a non-gendered third person singular pronoun when I read "The Making of English" by Henry Bradley. Linguistic change is not an elixir for social change. My ...

I am a hippie and I do not do drugs. I eat foraged food and I have never died. I am a vegan and I think wool is the best fiber for warmth when considering both animal wellfare and environmental impact. I have extreme pascifism views and I enjoy playing violent video games. I am introverted and shy a...

what would a widely used non-gendered pronoun do?

In Finnish, there are no gendered pronouns. There are two third person singular pronouns: "hän" used for people and "se" for everything else. Knowing this, when I moved to Finland, I had lots of excited expectations about how the lack of gender distinction in language would translate to a lack of ge...

Re: when do you have to introvert?

I've had a bit of the opposite reversal of Meperidine. I have always been extremely introverted, but for the past two years I have grown to crave social contact. My spouse is the most introverted person I have ever encountered and my primary social outlet. I think he'd like me to make friends just s...

Re: spelling error on teh wiki

Kind of like the internet, Tehnically, when not capitalized "internet" means any connected network of computers, you know, like a LAN party. When capitalized, "Internet" means what you called "the internet". Okay, wow, that was a rush. I need to regroup and reconsider my normal stance on snarkiness.

Re: What would convince you that you are wrong about Feminis

I like the idea that a belief needs to be conceivably falsifiable. As a rule, I try to make sure that I know what standards of evidence I would accept that would invalidate my acceptance of an idea, no matter how uncomfortable it makes me. The major argument I've seen against this standard is that t...

Re: Daily mansplanation fix

I was the coordinator for some shared community gardens. Among the various things I did, I knew how the gardens were plotted out and what had been planted where (for the most part). A volunteer approached me about pulling up the mustard, because "It keeps budding." Me: "Did someone plant mustard?" H...

Re: Women against feminism

It is possible for someone to be an egalitarian and a feminist. It is possible for someone to be an egalitarian and not a feminist, yet not anti-feminist. These women this thread has been theorizing about have posted on #WOMENAGAISTFEMINISM, which puts none of the tumbler posters in either of those ...

Re: How do you consume media?

I had never really thought about it before, but am now painfully aware that the vast majority of media I consume is produced by heterosexual white men. I also tend to consume media in this fashion: http://www.unshelved.com/2006-2-26 So when I find an author I really like, out of the pool of primaril...

Re: sexism and religion

I thought of a good way of saying what it is I think I'm trying to say in this thread: religion, or at least the way Christian religion is practice/preached by some in America, seems to be a means to an end, whereas the sexism that comes directly out of patriarchy seems to be an end in itself. So s...

Re: sexism and religion

Of course, Christianity comes straight out of patriarchal social structures anyway, but what I'm wondering is whether the sexism that exists in America, though originating from patriarchy, has to go through Christianity in order to have as much hold on people's thinking as it does. Unfortunatley, I...

I know it's been almost a week, so I'm sorry if I'm not adding anything of value to this thread. I really appreciated what lillerina said in the original post. Re: I used to be a pregnant lurker

Even when I tell myself "They're only doing it to get a :star:", I still feel all sorts of warm and fuzzy from these welcoming messages. I started foraging a few years ago while living with awesome people and working in a community shared garden. We would weed the garden, and then take many of those...

Re: Women against feminism

I agree this is one of the problems of feminism, and its not entirely a problem OF feminism - that's another nuance of my point. The problem is one that's even larger than feminism, but it is also rooted in the idea that certain feminist ideas lack the explanatory power that feminists claim while s...

Re: Women against feminism

I can empathize with some of these women. I used to have a negative view of feminism, but I mostly attribute that to ignorance, misunderstanding, and partial understanding (all of which I still possess). I read some of them and think "I used to think that". Some are things that I still think, but I ...

I like that putting those real comments in this format makes them just ridiculous and silly for me. Whereas under the context in which they are found, I find them to be soul-crushing. Although it is something that will give plenty of people a bit of respite, it seems to have similar problems as thin...

it was a question of "Is it emotional abuse for a person to withhold sex for no other reason than "I want to let my partner suffer for a bit"" There could be an unlimited number of reasons a person may not want to have sex with another person. I suspect the "no other reason" is an impression rather...

To be clear, I am no longer pregnant.

When foraging, sometimes we're after a specific species, such as nettles, chanterelles, or raspberries. Other times we're open to whatever we find that we can use. My favorite find of that sort has been shaggy parasol mushrooms.
