Collecting

Post by Neko » Thu Sep 19, 4:05 2013

I've started collecting model horses. I played with them (alongside my dinosaurs) as a kid and they remind me of good times. Although now I know that Grand Champions is the cheap brand compared to Breyer. Pretty, shiny, want. They're all majestic n' shit.

Do you collect anything? Is it just for fun or do you invest in it seriously?

Cards. I have tons of baseball cards from 1989-1996 (when I collected), Star Wars CCG cards from about 1996-2003, Magic the Gathering cards from 1999-2001, Star Trek: TNG and other Star Trek collectors cards, LOTR CCG cards, and a few other sets. I don't collect them regularly, but there are periods when I'm into one game/fandom or another and amass a lot of cards. These days, I prefer buying deckbuilding games, but there's still some collecting in that (getting every Ascension expansion, picking up promo cards at conventions). It's fun, but I wouldn't shell out a lot of money to finish a collection or anything, and I'm not looking to sell.

I also collect books. This more has to do with my habits as a scholar, maybe, but I have a lot of books. I'm don't have much money (or time to read them), so I don't get to do it often, but I like collecting medieval and early modern texts from before 1920. The most beautiful book is a mid-19th century version of George Herbert, with wonderful illustrations like thorns and altars. I also have a pocket-sized version of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale from before 1914, and a few "newer" books (like The Prisoner of Zenda).

I don't really think about myself as collecting anything in particular (though I used to), though one might disagree if you looked in my fabric closet...

Matchbooks!!! I love matchbooks! I pick them up when I find them on the ground and take them whenever bars or restaurants have them. I also have some cool old ones from casinos and restaurants that I got from an estate sale a while ago, and some advertising TV shows from the 70s and 80s that were left at my old apartment for some reason. It's mostly just for fun but I will go out of my way to get them-- I went to the estate sale specifically because my roommate told me they had old matchbooks.

I hoard a lot of other strange things but those are the only thing I really think of myself as collecting. I had a massive rock collection when I was a kid that I had to give back to nature when I moved out of my mom's house.

I collect vinyl. (The record kind.) :) I'm also beginning to collect cats, which might become a detriment to my dating scene in the future. Oh, well, snoring cat is better than man in my bed right now. :)

I collect collections. It gets cumbersome.
It's a big world, and it never stays the same.

I don't have the attention span to be a collector. I like cards though, particularly tarot cards (only for aesthetic reasons). And I've still got my pokemon cards from 1999...
