do you keep a journal?

Post by angry-amy » Wed Jan 22, 21:23 2003

i was reading in a magazine the other day that 68% of people polled in a particular survey admitted to keeping a journal.

medical research has shown that people who journal are less likely to suffer from high blood pressure, and have better sleep patterns.

journaling helps to process emotions, answer difficult questions and keeps a chronicle of events.

i keep a journal and sometimes it is nice to look back when i am in a bad mood. i find the shittiest situation, and remember how i thought that it was the end of the world, then i think that if i could have gotten through that i could get through the thing that currently is posing a problem.

if you keep a journal please comment on the reasons and what benefits come from it. if you dont keep a journal please post reasonw why you dont.

I don't have enough to write about. My day is pretty much shitty and boring every day, and nothing changes. I used to try it, but there was never anything to say. "Yep, I woke up again today. Filled out job applications/did absolutely jack shit. I'm going to sleep now."

I have my online journal. It's really pretty perfect... I have thoughts every day to write about, but when I kept a paper journal I sometimes couldn't get myself to write them down because it felt a little pointless. With my online journal, I have a reason to write... vanity!

Journalling definately helps me. I make private entries in my online journal fairly often, if I just need to rant about life or whatever. It's nice.

I usually forget about it or don't have time, but I have this big maroon diary that I write in now...I got rid of all the other ones. I have this weird addiction to pretty notebooks. I buy tons of them. I should add that to the quirks post....anyway. I'll buy them and not write in them for a long time, and I almost feel like I should apologize in my diary. "Hey, what's up, sorry for not writing" as if the paper had feelings.

I have an online journal but I almost never write in it. I tried keeping a diary but I never wrote in it (I did the "sorry for not writing for so long" many times lol) and I read it over a few weeks ago (I found it stuffed in the closet) and I was thinking "this is pretty damn stupid..." at alot of the stuff I wrote lol. But I use my online one as a dream log sometimes, but I have a notebook I have to write the dreams down in first or I forget them before I go online, so yeah lol. I'm trying to remember to write in it sometimes. Can I get a weekly PM service telling me to?? Lol.

i used to do the same thing.

my attempt at "keeping a journal"
when im really mad or sad or glad or frustrated or befuddled or whatever i just take a piece of paper and write it all down and fold it up & stick it somewhere where i know i'll find it but no one else will. then when i find it i re-read it and usually end up throwing it away because i dont want someone to find it.

I keep an online diaryl and a private, written journal. My online diary is for my little circle of friends, ranting on about my day or something interesting.

But my Thought Journal I take everywhere. It's blue and I've covered the entire thing in inside jokes and things I like. I write every emotion in there, every poem. Like Amy sad, when I feel like crap, I go back and read what I've already been thru. It helps. I doddle in it, write lyrics and poems, anything. My Thought Journal is something that is MINE, and I wouldn't let anyone at all see. Ever.

I write in my journal whenever I feel like it, which is pretty often. I love writing all my thoughts down, my story ideas, anything. I have a bunch of folders stuffed full of ideas I've had, dreams I've had, or letters I've received. I always read back on my old journals, since I've been keeping them since the third grade. It's pretty amusing to see how my entires have changed, from "For lunch today I had a sandwich and then I played with my dog and then I went to sleep. Goodbye." to "Sometimes I wonder why I care so much. Today I...etc." I always write down the happiest moments in my life, so I can look back on them and smile when I'm having an awful day. I tend to do the "I'm sorry I haven't written in forever" thing for some reason...

it is sweet reading your opinions about writing in journals. i have been really busy lately and i know that i have a 5 hour plane ride ahead of me and i will need something to do, so i have been putting off writing in my journal all week.

by the time that i start writing on the plane there will be so much to talk about that i wont know where to start, and i will never get it finished, but alas- i am a procrastionator at heart.

procrastination is, after all, just like masturbation.
no matter how you justify it, you are still fucking yourself.

I've written in journals since I was little but I didnt get serious until my ninth grade year when my friend sarah gave me one. I completed that in one year, then I got another one (twice as big) and I'm still finishing that one. I'm about a month or so behind of when I should have finished it, but I write sporadically. so *shrug*. It's great to keep a journal though because if you get upset with someone but dont feel like yelling at them just freak out on your journal and no one is the wiser. Mine is full of inane stuff, that really only means something to me but thats why I love it. *:D* anyway.. I'm about to have to leave class so I better wrap this post up. bye!

I have an online journal full of banal ramblings and quiz results and things, and then I have my personal paper journal that I write in rarely, normally when I get poetry into my head.

Well, no, i dont keep one. I tried once, but... It takes so long to.. Like, make sentences, and, and when you look at one sentence then you focus on that sentence and forget about the previous sentence or the sentence after the sentence you are focusing on so, its, its like hard to, like, like, WELL it takes too much energy to keep all the sentences in your head at once in order to grasp the real meaning of them and remember why EXACTLYyou wrote them back then!!
So.. Its much better to, like, mix all the sentences and like, sorta blend them all together into an image and then draw that image.. Then you have it all right there, right on ONE page, not like 7 pages or something, its much easier to take in, survey, cus u can keep your eyes in one place instead of moving them constantly.

So, when you look back at that drawing, you remember the exact same feeling you had back then.. All the sentences it express, you know, a picture says more than a thousand words, right???

So, yeah... Oh, and not to mention, that when you write it down in words.. And everything that you feel and are going through is so carefully described and, and what if someone one day found that diary, huh?? Wouldnt THAT be awful! Then they could just read all of ur secrets and stuff and thoughs, read what went on inside your mind, u kno...? BUT when its drawed, when its a picture, then, THEN they wont neccesarily "decode" it, theres a chance that they wont see the meaning of it, u kno, see what its saying, maybe theyll just glance over it and then lose interrest without looking deeper, so even if someone found your diary (with drawings in instead of words) your not neccesarily "revealed", theres still that extra "lock" on it, you know!!

Yeah.. Drawing rules, but *sigh* i drew my last "real" drawing back in december, the seventh december to be exact.. *sigh* :( high school is draining me of my energy *sighs* :(

I think all of the people who voted "no" or only write in their journals sometimes should try and do so more often. It really is healthy for you, and sometimes it can be the best medicine. For people like me it's a safe way for me to release anger every day, because there are no consequences. In reality, I can't just tell everyone exactly what I think... so it builds up and builds up until I blow up. With a journal, the steam lets out slowly and no feelings are hurt.

So.. that's my two cents. Let's write more often.

Oh, and SBC, you should do that! It really makes it personal, not just "some book".

I keep one. I try to write daily, but lately, I've either been busy or tired, or nothing has happened that day and I don't want to waste precious pages.
